It followed two other very profitable movies: Far From Home, which made $1.13 billion, and Homecoming, with $881 million in worldwide revenue.
The initial response to the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been incredible – it broke records for trailer views, even surpassing those of Avengers: Doomsday. With the film now in theaters, we’re confident fans will be thrilled with this fourth standalone Spider-Man movie.
Even by Marvel standards, very little is known about the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. The role Sadie Sink will play remains a mystery, and online fans are speculating wildly – similar to the buzz surrounding potential cameos from Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire before Spider-Man: No Way Home.
We won’t reveal the answer here—not only because Marvel Studios might not appreciate it! But we can tell you the movie is set four years after the events of No Way Home, where everyone had forgotten about Peter Parker.
Life is tough for Peter, and he’s coping by throwing himself into his role as Spider-Man, watching over the neighborhood. Okay, so the movie starts with a really downbeat version of the Marvel logo – it immediately sets a sad tone! Spider-Man: Brand New Day quickly shows us just how lonely Peter’s been since everything went down in No Way Home. He’s totally thrown himself into being Spider-Man, taking on tons of work, but honestly? It’s kinda heartbreaking. He keeps checking MJ and Ned’s social media, like he can’t help but see what they’re up to… it’s basically the behavior of someone who’s been dumped and is still obsessively looking at their ex’s profiles.
The film features an enjoyable sequence with appearances from various villains and echoes the feel of the Spider-Man video game. It builds to a thrilling action scene introducing The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal. The dynamic between Holland and Bernthal is a standout part of the movie, though some of its more intense elements were toned down to make it suitable for all ages.
Unlike other Spider-Man films in Tom Holland’s series which featured world-ending threats, Brand New Day returns to the smaller scale of Spider-Man: Homecoming. This movie focuses on Peter’s personal struggles with loneliness and grief, giving those feelings space to breathe without relying on forced humor.
The film’s serious tone occasionally clashes with the need for big action sequences and connections to other Marvel movies, but it avoids becoming just a series of cameos that distract from the plot. Bruce Banner’s appearance isn’t essential, and cutting his scenes could have streamlined the movie, but watching Spider-Man and The Punisher fight alongside Hulk is still enjoyable.
Thankfully, Peter Parker remains the heart of the film, and Tom Holland delivers his strongest performance as Spider-Man to date. While he spends much of the movie in costume—even more than previous films—Holland conveys so much emotion through subtle movements and body language. You’ll even see a surprisingly poignant side to the character, like what it looks like when Spider-Man is feeling down while swinging through the city.
Tom Holland delivers a surprisingly nuanced emotional performance in this film, making his scenes with Peter’s friends, Ned and MJ, particularly impactful. The script, written by Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, avoids simple resolutions; the interactions between these characters don’t unfold as expected, but still effectively showcase the wonderful chemistry between Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon, highlighting what feels lost.
You already know and love the main actors from their previous work, but Sadie Sink is the one to watch. We won’t give anything away, but she’s fantastic. Sink has always been a standout performer in Stranger Things, and she proves it again here. Her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut is truly impressive, even if you already knew her role.
The story development for Peter and [SPOILER] come together powerfully at the movie’s emotional peak, but it’s not simply a sad film. It features impressive action sequences – especially the swinging scenes, which are better than anything we’ve seen before in this series – and exciting fights with well-planned choreography. Director Destin Daniel Cretton also uses slow motion effectively to highlight key heroic moments.
The film includes some fun surprises for fans, though none are as shocking as the appearances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in No Way Home. Maybe the filmmakers realized they couldn’t top that, so they cleverly focused on a more personal story, creating a true neighborhood Spider-Man movie.
However they came to the decision, we’re happy about it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is yet another fantastic movie for Tom Holland as Peter Parker, and if the title means a fresh beginning, we’d eagerly sign up for another three films!
