Things are changing for Spider-Man on multiple fronts. As fans eagerly anticipate the next Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman has announced that their live-action Spider-Man films are also entering a new era.
Sony’s earlier effort to build a universe of movies around Spider-Man’s supporting characters wasn’t successful. However, speaking on the podcast The Town with Matthew Belloni, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman confirmed they do plan to revisit the live-action Spider-Man universe, and this time it will be a completely new beginning.
Rothman didn’t share many details about Sony’s future plans for Spider-Man movies. The main question now is whether this new start for the franchise will feature a different actor in the role of Spider-Man. However, Rothman seemed very optimistic about the project, stating, “You should never underestimate Kevin Feige; he’s a skilled producer and knows what he’s doing.”
How Will Sony’s New Live-Action Spider-Man Movies Relate to the MCU?
Because Spider-Man is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony has shifted its focus away from making solo Spider-Man films and has instead been developing movies centered around Spider-Man’s villains and lesser-known characters. There was a hint of something more planned, but it never materialized.
It used to make sense that Sony avoided releasing multiple Spider-Man movies, fearing competition within its own lineup. But things have changed. Warner Bros. is now planning several Batman films with different actors playing the role, which opens up new possibilities. Sony might be able to do something similar with Spider-Man.
Venom Is Also Heading to a New Era
Sony’s attempts to create a Spider-Man universe outside of the main movies didn’t really work, with one notable exception: the Venom films. Starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote, these three movies were by far the most successful of any featuring Spider-Man’s enemies.
I just heard some exciting news before the Rothman interview – Sony’s planning another Venom movie! Apparently, it’s going to be a really different take on the character than we’ve seen before. The good news is, Tom Hardy is still expected to be part of it somehow. We don’t know exactly what that will look like yet – maybe he’ll be a producer, or perhaps just lend his voice to Venom. It’s all a bit mysterious right now, but I’m definitely intrigued!
The next Spider-Man movie is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will open in theaters on July 31.
