The final installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy isn’t out for another eight months, leaving fans eager to find out when it will hit theaters. Adding to the excitement, the film will be shown in a few select theaters using 70mm IMAX, and tickets for those showings went on sale earlier this week. Demand was so high that some screenings quickly sold out, leading to people trying to resell tickets at inflated prices.
Many people are complaining that movie tickets now cost as much as a monthly streaming subscription, leading some to wait and watch films at home instead. IMAX tickets are even pricier, and with added fees, a single seat can easily exceed $30. Surprisingly, some are reselling tickets to 70mm IMAX screenings online for incredibly high prices – over 100 times the original cost – on sites like eBay.
Tickets for IMAX 70mm showings of Dune: Part Three are varying widely in price, depending on the location, date, and time. While some are available for around $100, others are selling for much more. As of today, the most expensive tickets listed on eBay are a pair for the Thursday, December 17th preview night at the Cinemark Dallas XD and IMAX, priced at $4,500. The seller claims these are the best seats in the house, located in the center of the auditorium. Most listings fall somewhere between $500 and $1,000.
Everyone’s desperate to see this film, and they want the full cinematic experience – the biggest screen, the loudest sound. It’s no surprise tickets are in high demand. But what’s really frustrating is seeing people on eBay trying to cash in on the hype. These aren’t folks who suddenly can’t go; they’re simply trying to profit from the excitement, and it’s pretty obvious. It’s not about recouping costs, it’s pure opportunism.
It’s another matter entirely if people will actually purchase these tickets, but some listings are already attracting bids.
As a moviegoer, it’s honestly amazing to see how much buzz there is around Dune now. It’s come a long way! For years, Frank Herbert’s books had a dedicated fanbase, but never quite reached the mainstream popularity of Star Wars or Star Trek. There have been a few attempts to bring Dune to the screen – remember David Lynch’s version, which he wasn’t even happy with? – and various TV miniseries. Even the first Dune film from Denis Villeneuve had a weird release – it showed up on HBO Max the same day it hit cinemas, which was a direct result of the pandemic and Warner Bros. trying to figure things out. But now, seeing tickets being resold for crazy prices? That really shows how much the franchise has blown up.
The third Dune movie, based on the novel Dune Messiah, is scheduled for release on the same day as Avengers: Doomsday, demonstrating Warner Bros.’ willingness to compete directly with Disney’s major event film.
