Solana is getting ready for a big upgrade called Alpenglow, which will significantly speed up how quickly transactions are confirmed.
Currently, it takes about 12 seconds for a transaction to be fully processed on Solana. A new project called Alpenglow is working to reduce that time to just 150 milliseconds, meaning payments and trades could be confirmed almost immediately.
This update alters the way validators verify actions on the network. Validators are essentially independent computers that confirm transactions and ensure everyone agrees on the official record of the blockchain.
How Solana is Changing with Alpenglow
Currently, validators share a lot of voting information with the network. Alpenglow will simplify this process by grouping many votes together into a single, compact digital certificate.
Think of it like switching from many individual approval letters to a single document with all the signatures. This simplifies things and reduces the amount of information the Solana network has to handle.
This change will free up more space on the network for everyday transactions. This means services like trading platforms, payment apps, and DeFi could handle increased activity more quickly, especially when things get busy.
Validators need to register their new BLS public keys first. Solana plans to launch this upgrade gradually between August and October 2026, but this timeline is subject to change as they test the process.
Solana’s Price Reacts Ahead of the Upgrade
Solana (SOL) is currently valued around $77 per token, giving it a market value of approximately $45 billion. This makes it the seventh-largest cryptocurrency.
As an analyst, I’m seeing a bit of a mixed signal with this token. While it’s down significantly – about 61% over the last year – we’ve actually seen a nearly 5% increase in the past month. This creates a somewhat uncertain outlook for its price right now.
What Comes Next Before Mainnet Goes Live
Alpenglow is expected to launch between August and October of 2026, but Solana hasn’t announced a specific date yet.
The system update won’t start until enough validators have registered and the Validator Admission Ticket is working. This ticket verifies each validator’s key before they can participate in voting with the new system.
This month, Solana launched new tools for community voting and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) through Securitize.
Experts who follow Solana’s typical price trends have observed that network upgrades often lead to increased buying and selling. However, this hasn’t always been the case. It remains to be seen if the upcoming Alpenglow upgrade will cause a similar boost, which hinges on validators successfully completing their registration process by the October deadline.
