As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of board game experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that Sky Team is a must-have addition to any tabletop enthusiast’s collection. Having attended Gen Con several times and witnessed the buzz around this cooperative game, I was excited to finally give it a spin.
About a year after nailing down the victory at Gen Con in Indianapolis, the acclaimed cooperative game “Sky Team” has been bestowed the Spiel des Jahres title, a prestigious German accolade for the top board game of the year. This recognition was publicly declared in a blog post on Sunday, officially inducting the game into the esteemed company of modern classics like “Catan,” “Carcassonne,” and “Ticket to Ride.”
In “Sky Team,” players assume the positions of a plane’s pilot and copilot, tasked with bringing their heavily loaded aircraft safely down on a runway. This engaging 20-minute adventure is filled with excitement as players contend with unfavorable weather conditions and vie for landing clearance at one of numerous global airports against competing planes.
As a gamer, I can’t help but be blown away by Sky Team from start to finish. The gameplay, atmosphere, and theme are all top-notch, leaving me impressed at every turn. And let me tell you, the short rounds pack a punch. Winning feels incredibly rewarding, but if you miss the landing, trust me, you’ll be itching to give it another go right away.
Recently, publishing company Le Scorpion Masqué has experienced great success. Its 2022 release, “Turing Machine,” received multiple industry accolades. This studio is well-recognized for “Decrypto,” which consistently ranks high on TopMob’s list of top board games. Due to this newfound popularity, “Sky Team” seems to be out of stock at certain retailers. Although your local game store may carry a copy together with the new expansion, “Sky Team: Turbulence,” you can also find the core game available at Barnes & Noble.
