Vtuber game developers are the new Twitch trend

As a gamer and someone who follows the indie game development scene closely, I find Raúl’s story absolutely fascinating. His transformation into Molegato, the droopy-eyed white cat VTuber, is not just a fun and quirky gimmick, but an effective way for him to connect with his audience and showcase his work in a unique and engaging way.

Raul, the independent game creator famous for launching the enchanting and colorful 3D platformer titled “Frogun,” experiences a total makeover in his digital work process.

Whenever he starts a live broadcast on Twitch, he transforms into a lethargic, white cat named “Molegato” for an engaging experience. His setup functions similarly to that of other Virtual YouTubers, enabling the low-poly model of his character to mirror his facial expressions and facilitate real-time interaction as “Molegato.” This quirky gimmick is part of a broader phenomenon where game developers stream using low-poly VTuber personas.

Since its launch in May, Raúl’s channel has gained 148 followers and around twenty viewers per session. While these figures aren’t massive, Raúl shared with TopMob that live streaming has given him the opportunity to connect with numerous interesting individuals within the community. Additionally, he’s acquired new skills and completed small projects that will prove beneficial for his future gaming endeavors.

I came across an intriguing concept for my next streaming project from Dooper, a developer I admire, and GauntletQueen, a low-poly VTuber and artist. In today’s bustling indie gaming scene, it’s no easy feat for developers to establish their unique identity with so many new projects emerging every day. However, VTubing has emerged as an innovative solution for some developers seeking to find their audience. Based on Twitch Tracker, Dooper boasts over 15,000 dedicated followers and averages around 100 viewers per stream during the last six months. Inspired by his success, I’m considering giving streaming and game development a go simultaneously.

Raúl finds it convenient to engage with people online by representing himself as an adorable 3D animated character, helping him forge connections in spite of his introverted nature.

He preferred not to set up a camera for himself as he was still uneasy with it. Instead, a VTuber (Virtual YouTuber) seemed like the ideal solution, which he shared with TopMob through private messages on X. Raúl then created a model and ended up designing a cat that resembled “a frazzled and extremely weary little creature, just like me!” Consequently, Molegato – a combination of Raúl’s favorite animals: cats and moles – came into existence.

Raúl’s streams showcase diversity: he explores various elements of game development each time, maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. During his recent stream, mellow funk tunes filled the background as he sketched a raccoon girl character with human features.

Today’s modeling session was quite an exciting ride! At certain moments, the supports vanished, leaving insufficient room for adjustments, forcing me to resume weight painting. Nevertheless, we persevered and completed the task.

As a VTuber, streaming offers an engaging visual method for developers to showcase their projects. Raul’s avatar aligns with the artistic flair of his game creations, while amusing stream segments generate content perfect for disseminating his work across social media platforms.

As a gamer and an insider in the gaming industry, I’m always intrigued by the behind-the-scenes action that goes into creating new games. But with so many non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and industry secrets keeping things under wraps, it can be challenging to get a peek into the development process. That’s why it’s exciting to see game developers streaming their work online for all of us to witness. It’s not just about showcasing technical skills or learning new tricks; streaming adds a personal and emotional connection to the creation of these digital worlds. By sharing their experiences, developers humanize the process, allowing fans to feel more connected to the games we love.

As a passionate streamer, I aim to create a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere in my channels, where indie creators feel welcomed even if they’re not at their best or dealing with anxiety. Growing up as an introvert, I didn’t have anyone to guide me through these experiences, so I am committed to fostering openness and support around such topics.
