As a lifestyle observer, I was really struck by a recent interview with Mike Bailey, best known as Sid from Skins. It’s amazing to see how much he’s changed since his days as a teen star – he seems a world away from that role now, and it’s clear he’s intentionally chosen a life outside of the spotlight. It’s refreshing to see someone prioritize a different path after experiencing early fame.
The 37-year-old actor first became well-known for playing Sid Jenkins in the popular E4 show that aired from 2007 to 2008. He starred alongside Nicholas Hoult, who later played Superman, and Academy Award winner Daniel Kaluuya.
Now a drama teacher, he had bleached blonde hair and didn’t wear glasses, unlike when he was on the show.
Fans on Reddit expressed their surprise at seeing him, with comments like “I haven’t seen him in ages!” and “Wow, he’s actually handsome – age suits him!” Many admitted they didn’t recognize him, and several focused on his hair. One commenter was so surprised they said they couldn’t even picture him as himself.
Mike shared the difficulties of being a professional actor and explained that he quit acting after finishing college.
I decided to focus on completing college rather than pursuing auditions and getting an agent after choosing between the first and second [series].
It wasn’t until the second season that I found an agent, and surprisingly, that’s when things actually became much slower for me professionally.
‘[My career] didn’t die a death, but it kind of did’.
After his role in Skins, Mike appeared in the historical drama documentary 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth and the film We Are the Freaks, alongside Adam Gillen from Benidorm. He later decided to become a teacher.
Many of our graduates have gone on to achieve great success, with award-winning projects, Oscar and BAFTA nominations, and impressive film credits. Others have pursued different paths – one popular alumnus became a neuroscientist, and another found fulfillment in teaching.
Tony Stonem, played by Nicholas, was a captivating character – effortlessly cool but also skilled at getting what he wanted. Though his actions weren’t always ethical, the then-17-year-old actor quickly won over audiences with his good looks and daring plans.
Nicholas Hoult had already gained recognition for his role in About a Boy at age 11, and Skins was his next major part before becoming an adult.
As a lifestyle observer, I’ve definitely seen a transformation! This actor, now 35 and originally from Wokingham, Berkshire, has really come into his own. He’s completely embraced that leading man persona, and it genuinely suits him.
Throughout the 2000s, he became a leading actor in several major hit movies, like the X-Men films, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Favourite, and The Menu. Most recently, he’s taking on the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman movie.
Kaya Scodelario played Effy, Tony’s younger sister, on the show. Effy was known for often partying even more than her brother, and frequently slipped out at night to have fun.
Kaya instantly won over audiences, which kickstarted her thriving acting career. Remarkably, she landed the role at only 14 years old, with no prior acting experience.
As a lifestyle observer, I always keep an eye on rising talent, and Daniel is a perfect example! It’s amazing to think he was just 18 years old when he first captured audiences with his incredibly charismatic role as ‘Posh Kenneth’ on Skins. He clearly had star power even then, and it’s no surprise he’s become such a celebrated actor – and an Oscar winner, at that!
The actor’s reputation quickly grew thanks to a series of successful roles, notably in shows like Black Mirror and the film Black Panther.
He gained international recognition in 2017 for his starring role in Jordan Peele’s critically acclaimed horror film, Get Out.
I was so thrilled to see him in the director’s 2022 film, Nope, and then even more excited when he voiced Hobart ‘Hobie’ Brown, a character I absolutely love, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse! It was a fantastic performance.
I remember when Joe Dempsie almost quit acting! It’s hard to believe now, considering how iconic he is as Chris from the show, but before he landed that role around age 20, he was seriously considering giving up on his dream. It really feels like that part saved his career, and I’m so glad he stuck with it.
Oh my gosh, since then Joe’s career has just skyrocketed! He’s become a proper star, landing amazing roles like Doctor Who, then England ’89, and more recently, he was in Game of Thrones and The Fades! I’m so proud, he’s just getting better and better!
I remember when Skins first came out – it was totally groundbreaking! As a young millennial myself, I was completely hooked. It really captured what life felt like for us at the time – all the messy, wild stuff like experimenting with relationships, parties, and, yeah, sometimes just ditching school. It felt so real and honest, and it definitely resonated with a whole generation.
