Silksong is harder than Hollow Knight because “Hornet is inherently faster and more skillful than the Knight,” Team Cherry says, and you can use Elden Ring logic to get around the difficulty anyway

Hollow Knight: Silksong is sparking debates about game difficulty, much like those surrounding new games from FromSoftware. However, the developers at Team Cherry say the challenging gameplay simply comes from wanting to make the character Hornet awesome. Plus, players can approach it with the same mindset they used to enjoy Elden Ring and avoid getting discouraged.

According to Team Cherry’s Ari Gibson, the enemies in Silksong needed to be more challenging than those in Hollow Knight. Because Hornet is naturally faster and more skilled than the Knight, even basic enemies required more complex and intelligent designs, as detailed in a book accompanying Silksong’s exhibit at the ACMI museum in Melbourne, Australia. Dexerto recently shared excerpts from this book.

According to William Pellen, the standard ant warrior shares the same attack patterns as the original Hornet boss – a combination of dashes, jumps, and downward strikes. They also added the ability for these enemies to evade attacks and keep up with the player. Unlike enemies faced by the Knight, Hornet’s enemies needed more ways to pursue her as she attempted to escape. Instead of reducing Hornet’s strength, the developers chose to make her opponents more powerful.

What’s really exciting about Silksong is the freedom it gives players to explore however they want,” says Gibson. “Some might stick to the main path and finish the game quickly, while others can wander off and discover hidden areas, secrets, and alternative routes. The game will be challenging at times, but that freedom – the ability to choose where you go and what you do – is a key part of the experience.

Although the developers don’t directly mention Elden Ring, the game feels similar in its approach to open-world exploration. Like Elden Ring, if you encounter a difficult boss, you’re free to explore other areas, learn new abilities, improve your character, and return to the fight better prepared.

According to Team Cherry, Silksong will be designed like Hollow Knight, offering players multiple options to overcome challenges. As explained by Gibson, players can reduce the difficulty by exploring the world, learning enemy patterns, or even finding ways to bypass obstacles altogether, instead of hitting an unbreakable wall.
