Did the season 3 finale of Shrinking fall flat, or is it building towards a big conclusion in the final season? The episode, titled “And That’s Our Time,” leaves viewers questioning what’s next for characters like Paul (Harrison Ford) and Jimmy (Jason Segel). Many are feeling confused and disappointed with how season 3 ended, especially with the show’s final season still to come on Apple TV+.
Since it premiered in 2023, Shrinking has resonated with viewers through its honest portrayal of grief and loss, even for those who initially tuned in for other reasons. The season finale, “And That’s Our Time,” differs from previous episodes by being less sensational and lacking major surprises – a departure from what audiences had come to expect. However, while the finale isn’t filled with shocking twists, it effectively lays the groundwork for a satisfying conclusion to the series.
What Happens in the ‘Shrinking’ Season 3 Finale?

Throughout Apple TV+’s Shrinking, it becomes clear that Jimmy is destined to end up on his own. By the end of Season 3, after Paul and Julie leave and Alice heads off to college, Jimmy faces several emotional farewells. Brian and baby Sutton will temporarily move to Tennessee with Charlie for work, and Liz and Derek are preparing for a European trip before their grandchild arrives. Meanwhile, Gaby is flourishing as she works to transform the clinic into a trauma center, and she cleverly turns Derrick’s proposal around by planning a surprise engagement for him instead.
The episode ends with Jimmy seemingly avoiding immediate loneliness, thanks to a surprise visit from Paul. This leads to another reunion with friends from How I Met Your Mother within the show Shrinking, as Paul tries to get Jimmy back together with Sofi. However, despite these positive developments, Jimmy isn’t necessarily headed for a straightforward happy ending. While “And That’s Our Time” offers some good moments and character growth, it feels like a somewhat underwhelming conclusion to Shrinking Season 3 – but could this be a temporary calm before more drama?
How “And That’s Our Time” Sets up the Last Season of ‘Shrinking’ & the Show’s Ending

Everyone’s known for some time that Season 4 will be the last season of Shrinking, as show creator Bill Lawrence announced before Season 3 even began. Given the current storylines, particularly Paul’s struggle with Parkinson’s disease, most viewers expect the show to culminate with his passing. While the specifics of how this will be handled remain unknown, it would be a surprise if Paul doesn’t ultimately succumb to the illness.
Now that Paul has moved to Connecticut with Julie and his family, it’s strange to think he and Jimmy might be completely apart for the final season. But that probably won’t happen. There are two main possibilities for how things could unfold. Either Jimmy’s health will worsen, leading him to move to Connecticut to be near Paul, or something more troubling will occur. The show has hinted throughout its run, and especially in earlier seasons, that Jimmy might relapse into a suicidal state. This was particularly foreshadowed in scenes depicting Jimmy and Alice’s struggles after Tia’s death.
The reunion of Jimmy and Sofi in “And That’s Our Time” doesn’t feel entirely earned for many viewers. Their relationship felt a bit strained throughout the third season, and Jimmy initially broke things off because he was still heartbroken over Tia. While it’s understandable that Jimmy, now alone and facing a life change, would reconnect with Sofi, it’s questionable if it’s the right move for him. Their dynamic hasn’t really evolved since they last dated, and Jimmy’s grief over losing his wife isn’t likely to disappear simply because of a date. He enjoys Sofi’s company, but their connection isn’t strong enough for him to fully move past Tia, and he struggles to see Sofi as anything other than a reminder of his wife, despite her sensitivity.
I’m really intrigued by the possibility of Paul stepping back into Jimmy’s life in Season 4 of Shrinking. It seems Paul will probably try to shield Jimmy from the worst of things, even as he’s secretly struggling with his own health. He’s seen firsthand what Parkinson’s does to people – he’s thought a lot about the experiences of patients like Michael J. Fox and what they’ve lost – and he knows what’s coming for him. But despite everything, I don’t think that will stop him from being there for Jimmy, no matter what.
The ending of Shrinking could go several ways, but it’s clear the story will ultimately resolve the issues it began with. The final season will definitely have to address the two main storylines – Paul’s Parkinson’s disease and Jimmy’s journey with grief – and viewers will expect satisfying conclusions. For now, fans will have to wait for the last season to see if the somewhat underwhelming finale of Season 3 was actually a clever setup for the show’s overall ending.
