Shrinking season 2 episode 5 review and ending explained, "Honesty Era"

As a fan who’s been through a rollercoaster of emotions with this show, I must say that the latest episode of Shrinking season 2 was nothing short of a whirlwind! The Honesty Era certainly didn’t disappoint, as it brought about revelations and confrontations that left me on the edge of my seat.

In the fifth installment of season 2 from the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking,” titled “The Truthful Period,” the central theme revolved around honesty. Characters found themselves grappling with this concept, and it wasn’t always a comfortable experience. However, as we know, the truth can lead us in the right direction, especially when dealing with loved ones. This lesson was learned by many characters, while others struggled to accept it. Now, let’s delve into our review of this latest episode.

First off, let’s focus on Alice. It was actually Conner who admitted to Summer that he and Alice had been intimate. This revelation sent Summer into a rage, causing her to physically attack Alice. She sure is strong! Wow, I didn’t see that coming. As for Conner, he had no choice but to be truthful with his girlfriend, which will likely strain Alice’s friendship with Summer. Let’s wait and see how this unfolds in the upcoming episodes.

In these scenes, Derek proved to be quite amusing. He’s the most likable character on the show, yet he clearly dislikes Summer. It’s quite humorous to see him happy about this turn of events. This heated exchange was witnessed by everyone, so everyone is now aware of it, even Jimmy. Despite the episode’s focus on honesty, Alice remains unable to explain to her father why she did what she did with Conner. Of course, we understand that she’s concealing the fact that she saw a drunk driver, which she hasn’t revealed yet.

Jimmy has stopped attempting to make her confess, since he knows better than to press the issue, although he still tries to manipulate her feelings. Alice doesn’t bolt right away either; she attributes it to being hurt by Summer’s tackle, but I believe there’s also some character development at play. Their matching tattoos of Tia’s initials are adorable, and I can’t wait for more heartwarming father-daughter moments in the future.

Initially, there’s Gaby. She reconciles with Jimmy following a heartfelt conversation between them, and she also opens up more with her sister. It turns out that Gaby’s sister struggled with addiction, which led to Gaby having to shoulder the burden of caring for both her sister and their mother. However, Gaby continues to hold her sister accountable for this past transgression. Jimmy, in his wisdom, helps Gaby understand that she should not bear this responsibility forever. Friends offer truthful advice, and Jimmy provided just that – a truth Gaby needed to hear and heal.

Jimmy makes up with one friend while another gets mad at him. And this time that’s Liz. Everything just kind of explodes and she blames all her frustrations and the things going wrong in her life right now on Jimmy. I mean, when he blurted out that she ran into her ex-boyfriend, Mac, Jimmy definitely should not have said that. Speaking of, did you recognize the actor? That would be Josh Hopkins, Christa Miller’s (Liz) former co-star on Cougar Town!

Paul acknowledges his past infidelity towards his ex-wife, which led to their marital troubles, including a growing rift in their relationship with their daughter. Fortunately, they were able to reconcile, with Julie’s involvement too. However, the relationship between Sean and his father remains strained, as they have not been able to overcome their issues.

Sean makes an effort to speak truthfully with his father regarding the reasons for his altercations and odd behavior upon returning from Afghanistan service. He admits that he had attempted to seek assistance but felt ignored by his dad. To be frank, I found this man irritating and excessively self-centered before, but it wasn’t until he began shouting at Sean without accepting any fault that I truly grasped the extent of his flaws. This helps explain why Sean hesitated to confront his father, despite Jimmy and Paul’s advice.

Just as the episode seemed to be wrapping up on a hopeful note, I had a feeling something wasn’t quite right. After his talk with his father, Sean finds himself embroiled in a scuffle with the construction workers who have been littering bottles on their lawn following their disagreement in episode 4. Oh, Sean! I couldn’t help but wish to comfort him after his dad showed such unkindness towards him. It’s disheartening to see him back in this predicament, especially considering all the growth he’s shown lately.

I thoroughly enjoyed episode 5 of Shrinking’s second season, and it has been my top pick so far this season. I appreciate that the theme of honesty allowed each character to make significant strides in their individual storylines. Moreover, issues that were initially introduced are now beginning to be tackled. There’s still plenty more unfolding, but as a viewer, I find the rhythm of the show quite engaging. Rating: A
