Should you free or leave Ilora in Avowed?

Immediately following an attack and being left on an island, you’ll find yourself in Avowed’s Living Lands making life-or-death decisions for others. Here’s hoping the Envoy didn’t sustain injury before reaching the shore. The story commences with Ilora, a questionable character confined within a cell. You have the option to either set them free or leave them behind as you make your escape.

In these initial stages, you’ll have Garryck standing with you. This adds more complexity to the situation. Meanwhile, Ilora is attempting to persuade you to search for the key to free her from imprisonment. However, Garryck strongly disagrees about trusting Ilora, given that she was previously in a cell before the island’s upheaval. Therefore, it’s reasonable to suspect there might be valid reasons behind her confinement.

Should you free or leave Ilora?

Choosing whether to rescue or abandon Ilora has relatively quick impacts on the gameplay. If you choose to save Ilora, she becomes an ally in the battle against Steadman Ralke, a formidable adversary. On the other hand, if you decide to leave Ilora behind, she’ll try to fight you during the boss encounter, forcing you to defeat her.

Because Ilora isn’t a central figure in the narrative, this decision won’t affect the story greatly, but it’s beneficial to release Ilora as it simplifies the battle against Steadman Ralke. Having her join your team will make it simpler to inflict damage and survive against Ralke. Conversely, Garryck often absconds to fight Ilora if you decide to betray her, usually leaving you alone to face the boss. If she perishes, a note can be found on her body that expresses her farewell to her crew and offers additional background information.

To release Ilora, here’s what you should do: Enter the prison room using the boxes stacked behind as a step. Then, climb onto the rooftop hatch and descend into the jailor’s office directly, bypassing the barred door. Once there, snag the jail key from the hook near the door, unlock and open Ilora’s cell.

As a gamer, I find myself in a situation where I can decide whether to save Ilora or leave her behind. Either way, I’ll utilize her boat to flee the island and make my way to Dawnshore, marking the end of the prologue. If Ilora survives, we’ll have an opportunity for a heart-to-heart chat with both her and Garryck at the Claviger’s Landing docks before embarking on our next adventure.

If your ethical principles are causing you difficulty in releasing this individual labeled as a criminal, don’t fret. It seems that the guards at this fortress, and perhaps even across the Living Lands, might be tainted with corruption. Ilora appears to be a humble smuggler who was apprehended before reaching Paradis, and her illicit goods are probably common items, as the empire has strict controls over many basic commodities such as contraceptives.
