In a development that could have the economic equivalent of a cat falling off a table, the bitcoin staking platform known as Babylon has announced that the illustrious a16z crypto has decided to part with a cool $15 million. This funding is earmarked for something called Babylon Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (BTCVaults), which, if you squint hard enough, might actually sound like a fancy new way to store your old socks. These vaults are intended to let native Bitcoin serve as collateral across the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape-because, apparently, having a middleman is so last season.

In addition to tossing money into the proverbial wishing well, a16z crypto will also provide Babylon with strategic guidance and, presumably, a lot of advice that they would charge you for if they could. They’re bringing in their experience in funding base-layer and infrastructure projects, because who doesn’t want a little extra help when trying to build the financial future one blockchain at a time?

Babylon is positively glowing with excitement, claiming that a16z crypto’s participation shows they both believe Bitcoin is evolving into some sort of global collateral asset. Because, you know, what better way to describe an asset than “global collateral”? Guy Woullet, a General Partner over at a16z crypto, affirms this notion, which sounds quite impressive until you realize that a16z crypto is essentially the crypto and Web3 arm of the US venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz-think of it as the superhero version of a bank, without the cape.

“Today we’re sharing a major milestone for Babylon. @a16zcrypto is backing the Babylon Project with $15M to support the development and scaling of Babylon’s new protocol Trustless Bitcoin Vaults,” they tweeted, which sounds much cooler than it actually is.

The BTCVaults are designed to provide new, functional utility for the BABY token, which, let’s face it, sounds adorable.

According to the press release, these BTCVaults allow the locking of actual, genuine Bitcoin (not those pesky tokens that pretend to be Bitcoin). This means that external applications can verify that there’s real Bitcoin locked up, thus ensuring the vault isn’t just an empty box with a sign saying “Bitcoin Inside.” It also involves cryptographic mechanisms, which sounds complicated and important, the kind of thing you’d expect to find in a spy novel rather than finance.

The company argues that current methods of dealing with on-chain Bitcoin rely heavily on custodial lending-that’s where a third party holds your assets, which is about as comforting as letting your neighbor keep your prized collection of rare stamps. Or they use wrapped tokens like WBTC, which represent Bitcoin but aren’t the real deal. These methods introduce what they call counterparty risk and regulatory complexities, which is a fancy way of saying “more things to worry about.”

Babylon (BABY) is Bullish on the News

After the news of the a16z crypto partnership, BABY had a little party. It jumped from $0.01792 to $0.02133 before settling down at $0.01878-a modest increase of 4.8%. Its 24-hour trading volume hit a whopping $48 million, according to Coingecko, which is basically a lot of imaginary money changing hands.
