Next month, Cecilia Skingsley is stepping down from her position as the leader of the BIS Innovation Hub, ending her tenure that was set to last for five years, two years earlier than planned. This decision comes as part of a wider reorganization of leadership within the central bank institution.
It’s been reported that Cecilia Skingsley, head of digital currency at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), will be departing her position two years ahead of schedule. Since assuming this role in September 2022, she has led the BIS Innovation Hub, an organization established in 2019 to aid central banks in investigating cutting-edge financial technologies, such as central bank digital currencies.
Initially, The Innovation Hub consisted of only a handful of locations, but it has now grown to encompass seven financial hubs spread across the globe, such as London and Hong Kong. This growth is aimed at assisting central banks in integrating cutting-edge technology into their operations.
According to the report, Skingsley, who held the post of deputy governor at the Swedish central bank before, is set to depart for a government role as the County Governor of Stockholm County. Her tenure in this new position is slated to begin next month.
Pablo Hernandez de Cos is set to assume the role of BIS general manager starting in July. It’s been suggested that his arrival may coincide with a reduction in some aspects of the Innovation Hub, following its termination of a significant digital currency project with China and various Asian central banks due to escalating geopolitical conflicts regarding Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).
The head of BIS, Agustín Carstens, commended Skingsley’s efforts by stating in a release that the Innovation Hub significantly advanced towards achieving our objective of assisting central banks in overcoming the challenges of tomorrow, under her supervision.
According to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), they will share details about the procedure for selecting Skingsley’s successor at an appropriate time. Until then, Andrea Maechler, the current deputy general manager and a former Swiss central banker, will temporarily lead the Innovation Hub.
