Sheridan Smith looks unrecognisable as she breaks down in tears while transforming into murder campaign mum Ann Ming for real-life ITV drama I Fought The Law
As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for both art and real-life stories, I must say that Sheridan Smith’s transformation into Ann Ming for the upcoming series “I Fought The Law” is nothing short of inspiring. Her dedication to portraying this resilient, courageous mother who fought tirelessly for justice speaks volumes about her respect for the human spirit and its capacity for endurance in the face of adversity.
On a recent filming day in Teesside on Friday, Sheridan Smith appeared dramatically different when portraying the character of grieving mother Ann Ming in the upcoming true-to-life drama series, I Fought The Law.
43-year-old actress from Gavin and Stacey, Gavin And Stacey’s actress, was spotted tearfully emotional while preparing for intense scenes in the series, portraying her role with great passion.
In an unexpected turn of events, I found myself transforming into a character reminiscent of a mother involved in a murder investigation. Sporting a vibrant yellow wig and a lengthy beige trench coat, I wrapped myself in a cozy knitted sweater, altering my appearance significantly from my typical self.
The images depict Sheridan being restrained by law enforcement officials and other individuals during a heated moment, followed by him being seated in the back of an ambulance, holding tightly onto a cup while receiving consolation from another officer.
Her character Ann is a real woman who campaigned for 15 years to bring her daughter’s murderer to justice.
She got the UK’s 800-year-old ‘double jeopardy’ law overturned following the murder of her daughter Julie Hogg.
Julie was murdered by William ‘Billy’ Dunlop but jurors failed to find him guilty – twice.
At that point in time, since Billy had already confessed, it was not possible for him to face trial a second time, as per the existing legal rules.
After nearly 17 years of advocacy alongside her late husband Charles, Ann finally managed to change the law, and now, Billy is currently serving a life imprisonment term.
Julie, who was a mother to three-year-old, Kevin, and a wife to Andrew, was only 22 when she died.
Sadly, on a chilly January day in 1990, exactly 80 days following the event, Ann stumbled upon Julie’s lifeless body secreted away in the bathroom of her row house. This grim discovery was made by Billy.
Despite thorough investigations involving multiple police forensic units on the premises following her disappearance, they were unable to locate her remains.
In her own home, the person who took her daughter’s life choked her severely, followed by a horrific act of disfiguring Julie. Afterward, they concealed Julie’s body beneath the bathtub.
In her senior years, Ann is currently serving as a consultant during every stage of the filmmaking process for I Fought The Law.
She said: ‘My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and a number of years later confessed to her murder, for which he could only be prosecuted for perjury due to the 800-year-old Double Jeopardy Law.
I was determined not to let this obstacle hinder my pursuit of justice for Julie. I’m astonished and thrilled that Sheridan Smith has been cast as me.
‘Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful.’
In response to being chosen for the part, Sheridan expressed, “It’s an immense privilege for me to portray Ann Ming, a mother whose unwavering dedication to seeking justice for her slain daughter led her to tirelessly advocate for 15 years to amend the Double Jeopardy Law.”
She added: ‘She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.’
