Renowned actor William Shatner, famed for his role as Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, and a self-proclaimed crypto enthusiast, has been seen partaking in the closed beta testing of Elon Musk’s latest venture-X Money. One might have expected a man who has commanded a starship to command a cryptocurrency, but alas, the universe has its own peculiarities.
Contrary to the fervent hopes of the community, Shatner has declared that X Money’s connection to crypto is as tenuous as a Vulcan’s emotional restraint. “X Money is fiat, not crypto,” he quipped, a statement that has left enthusiasts both bemused and bewildered.
“X Money is fiat, not crypto,” Shanter says
Shatner, in his role as a beta tester for Musk’s ambitious X Money feature, has been tasked with spreading the word about this new app. It is a dream that Musk has nurtured since the late 1990s, when he founded X.com, later rebranded as PayPal. A man with grand ambitions, though perhaps not the sharpest financial acumen.

X Money, currently limited to US citizens, has Shatner as its most enthusiastic advocate, answering queries on X about its merits. “Just so we are all clear; @XMoney is fiat not crypto. It’s actual US Dollars backed by a real bank and is FDIC insured up to $250,000,” he tweeted, a safety net as reliable as a well-timed pun.

Last year, X secured payment licenses in every single US state, including those related to crypto. This spurred hopes that Musk would finally embrace cryptocurrencies, particularly Dogecoin, which Musk has long championed. Shatner, however, dashed these dreams, declaring X Money’s allegiance to fiat money and a “real bank”-those venerable institutions that have never, ever failed to disappoint.
Elon Musk confirms DOGE going to the moon
In early February, Musk returned to the topic of taking Dogecoin to the moon, replying to a meme tweet with a laconic “Doge on the moon is inevitable.” A future trillionaire’s promise, though one might question whether the moon is ready for such a venture. Dogecoin, meanwhile, remains 87.73% below its 2021 peak, a reminder that even memes have their limits.
