Serena Williams shared a photo on Instagram Monday showcasing her physique, following some criticism she received for reportedly using medication to help with weight loss.
The 44-year-old tennis star faced criticism last summer after sharing that she’d lost 31 pounds using Zepbound, a medication for weight loss.
Serena openly showed off her figure while brushing her teeth in the bathroom, wearing a white tank top and grey underwear.
I always love seeing what she wears, and recently she styled a really comfy but chic look. She paired some brown leggings with a simple white tee, then topped it off with this incredible Burberry cape – it’s seriously gorgeous, and I believe it costs around £2,550! It just proves she can pull off anything.
Just hours before, Serena was seen wearing a stylish outfit: a grey checked pencil skirt and jacket paired with a simple white tank top.
The tennis star, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, casually removed her fashionable jacket, and her tall black heels made her appear even more statuesque.
Serena pulled her blonde hair back into a ponytail and finished the look with large hoop earrings and a delicate gold necklace.
She wrote: ‘that good-good… day’.
Serena lost 31 pounds while using weight loss medication, as part of a collaboration with Ro, a company offering telehealth services for weight management.
The tennis star is now advertising the weight loss drug during the Super Bowl, taking her endorsement to a massive new platform.
Serena will appear in a commercial for Ro that showcases her weight loss transformation. The ad is scheduled to air during commercial breaks of the NFL’s championship game on February 8th.
In a commercial previewed on Wednesday, she shared that she’s been making progress and feeling healthier while using Ro, and mentioned she’s lost three more pounds since last August.
In the commercial, Serena danced in a light blue tennis outfit – a skirt and crop top – and, in a voiceover, explained how the medication had improved her health.
The Super Bowl commercial is designed to kick off a broader campaign showing how people can live healthier lives with Ro.
According to Vogue, Serena will be joined in the advertisement by NBA great Charles Barkley, who recently lost 45 pounds.
According to CBS, a 30-second commercial during last year’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs averaged a staggering $8 million.
This isn’t Serena’s first time starring in a Super Bowl ad. She’s previously partnered with brands like Michelob Ultra and Remy Martin to promote their products.
She gained a lot of attention when she appeared on stage with Kendrick Lamar during the Super Bowl halftime show last year.
This year’s campaign is likely to cause some surprise, given the significant controversy surrounding Serena’s previous announcement.
Last August, when the tennis star revealed she was using a GLP-1 medication, many fans were upset. They felt she was setting a bad example for the body positivity movement by using the drug.
A fan pointed out that Serena Williams is now publicly advertising a weight loss drug called Ro, which is similar to Ozempic, and saying she uses it as a healthy option.
I’m really disappointed in her, especially considering she’s a former athlete who has always promoted body positivity and a healthy lifestyle, not just focusing on looks.
One person expressed concern about GLP-1 medications, stating there are safety questions that haven’t been fully answered. They urged against promoting the drug for financial gain, warning that influencing others to use it could potentially cause them harm.
One fan expressed disappointment with Serena Williams’ promotion of Ozempic/GLP-1, arguing it’s being presented as a health decision when it seems to be about achieving a particular body image. The fan also pointed out that Williams didn’t have this physique during her athletic prime, suggesting her weight loss is purely for aesthetic reasons, and noted that the specific brand she was using was misidentified.
Serena recently shared photos of her post-workout body and told TODAY and People that the medication she was taking made her feel lighter, both physically and mentally.
Oh my gosh, Serena! It just breaks my heart to hear that after having little Olympia in 2017, she started dealing with weight struggles. It makes so much sense, being a new mom is HARD, and she was still Serena even then! It’s so relatable, and honestly, I admire her even more for being open about it, especially after stepping away from tennis at the US Open last year. She’s just… incredible.
She experienced challenges adjusting to her body after giving birth to her second daughter, Adira River, in August 2023, similar to what she’d gone through before.
Serena described a frustrating pattern: she’d lose weight quickly at first, but then her weight loss would stop completely, even though she consistently ate healthy and exercised as a professional athlete.
She then turned to Ro, a health care company she promotes as a paid spokesperson and in which her husband has invested, to learn more about GLP-1 medications.
