Fans are finally getting a new look at the upcoming anime adaptation of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Crunchyroll recently released a trailer showcasing how the beloved video game is being brought to life as a full anime series.
Sekiro trailer teases what to expect from new anime
A new anime series is coming based on the popular 2019 video game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It tells the story of Wolf, a skilled shinobi, who embarks on a dangerous quest to save his lord during a turbulent period in Japanese history. The recently released trailer showcases the game’s challenging battles, atmospheric environments, and the emotional core of Wolf’s fight.
Director Kenichi Kutsuna explained that his team put a lot of effort into adapting the game for television while remaining faithful to the source material. He told Variety they aimed to include as many elements from the original game as possible, though he acknowledged that using every detail would have been impractical and challenging.
Ever since the project was revealed at Gamescom in 2025, fans have been worried about how a complex, player-focused game could be adapted into a traditional TV series. Kutsuna admitted there was a lot of pressure, as viewers would be carefully scrutinizing the show. He emphasized that the team was dedicated to ensuring high quality to protect the franchise’s good name.
Kutsuna noted that projects like this always have unforeseen challenges, but he believes they ultimately delivered a worthy experience for fans of the franchise.
I’m really excited about how the composer, Shuta Hasunuma, is approaching the music for this series – he says it’s going to be key to building the emotions and overall mood. What’s especially amazing is that this is the very first time anything from FromSoftware has been brought to life on screen, so the anticipation for its release on Crunchyroll is incredibly high!
Let me tell you, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a true standout action game. FromSoftware really nailed the combat – it’s brutally challenging but incredibly rewarding. Forget just whacking away at health bars; this game is all about mastering timing, being precise with your attacks, and understanding how posture works. Every single enemy encounter feels like a lesson, forcing you to learn their moves and react perfectly. It’s no surprise it took home Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2019 – it truly deserves the praise.
