Oh, the drama! The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)—that bastion of suspense and paperwork—has once again hit the snooze button on 21Shares’s grand plan to launch a spot-based XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF). 💤
If you’re clutching your XRP tokens and hyperventilating into a paper bag, do try to relax. This is just the SEC doing what it does best: delaying things with all the urgency of a cat deciding whether to nap on the sofa or the bed. In other words, totally normal.
The SEC, in its infinite wisdom (and love of red tape), has up to 240 days to make up its mind about any ETF proposal. That’s eight months of “maybe,” “let’s see,” and “we’ll get back to you.” During this time, they collect public opinions, analyze data, and presumably drink a lot of coffee.
For those keeping score, 21Shares filed their paperwork on March 11. So this latest delay? Bang on schedule. The SEC typically sends out these “not yet, darling” notices about 70 days after a filing. It’s practically tradition at this point.
And it’s not just 21Shares feeling the love—Franklin Templeton Investments and Bitwise have also had their XRP ETF dreams put on ice earlier this year. Misery loves company, right?
Let’s not forget: Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs were also left hanging before finally getting the green light. The SEC still hasn’t approved any new altcoin ETFs, including those for Solana. Altcoins everywhere are weeping quietly in the corner.
When will XRP ETFs finally get their moment?
According to Bloomberg (who presumably have a crystal ball), spot-based XRP ETFs could be approved by year’s end. But if you’re feeling lucky, there’s a chance—however slim—that approval could come as soon as June. Place your bets, folks! 🎲
