Sebastian Stan is returning as Bucky Barnes in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. But he’s also taking on a very different role in a new drama called Fjord, and a first look at the project shows he’s almost unrecognizable.
Cristian Mungiu’s first English-language film, Fjord, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Neon will distribute the movie in the US, UK, and other markets, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet (according to Variety).
Neon has shared a first look at a new image from their upcoming drama, showcasing a dramatic makeover for actor Stan in his latest role. You can see the image below.

In Fjord, Stan is reunited with his A Different Man co-star, Renate Reinsve. They play Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu, a deeply religious Romanian-Norwegian couple who relocate from Romania to Norway with their children to be near Lisbet’s family.
The family quickly integrated into the neighborhood, and their daughter, Elia, soon made friends with the other children. But when Elia arrived at school with bruises, her parents faced questions and judgment from the community. This forced Mihai and Lisbet to address their differing beliefs about raising a family, personal freedom, and what it means to move forward.

In an interview with The Film Stage last year, director Cristian Mungiu shared that we’ll see a new side of the character Stan in his upcoming film, Fjord. Stan, who was born in Constanța, Romania, will be speaking Romanian in the movie, reflecting his background. He moved to New York with his mother when he was 12 years old.
I hadn’t worked on a project set in this universe before, but I was pleased to be able to collaborate with this team without compromising my filmmaking style. We had a good working relationship, and I was especially glad to start with Sebastian, as he knows some Romanian and wanted to include it in the movie,” Mungiu said.

If the movie Fjord isn’t released this year, Avengers: Doomsday will likely be the last time many fans see Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes in a Marvel film. Some fans are worried Bucky might be killed off in Avengers: Doomsday, particularly because Stan is also scheduled to play Harvey Dent in The Batman: Part II.
We’re hoping it turns out to be incorrect, because we’re not ready to see Bucky go just yet.
Fjord does not yet have a release date.
