As a huge fan of The Last of Us, I was really interested to hear what HBO’s CEO had to say about the show’s future. Apparently, they’re considering ending things after Season 3. In a recent interview, the CEO talked about the possibility of Season 3 being the last one, which is a little heartbreaking, but understandable given the source material.

HBO hasn’t confirmed whether “The Last of Us” will continue beyond season three, leaving the possibility that the popular video game adaptation might end after three seasons.
During a recent interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys was questioned about whether the next seasons of The Last of Us and Hacks would be their last. While Bloys didn’t confirm Season 3 would be the end for either show, he explained that the decision ultimately rests with the creative teams behind them. He stated, “It certainly seems that way, but we’ll let the showrunners decide. You should ask them.”
Comments recently highlighted the future of the show, which is overseen by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Mazin has already hinted that Season 3 won’t be able to fully finish the story. He told Collider that they’d likely need a fourth season to provide a proper conclusion, or else Season 3 would have to be significantly extended.
The showrunner explained that creating a longer season would take a lot of time, but the story already has natural breaking points where they could expand it. They believe Season 3 will likely be longer than Season 2.
Mazin admitted that the story couldn’t realistically be wrapped up in just three seasons. He’s hoping the show is successful enough to get a fourth season, which would allow them to finish the story properly, and believes that’s the most probable scenario.
Casey Bloys hinted that the show’s future beyond the current season is still up in the air. As of now, there hasn’t been an official decision or statement.
