The critically acclaimed turn-based RPG, Sea of Stars, is now available on Android and iOS for $10. Developed by Sabotage Studios and brought to mobile by Playdigious, Sea of Stars is a fantastic game that deserves to be on every gamer’s list.
The game features seven main characters you can play as, which makes it easier and more fun to learn and use the game’s features. Now, let’s get into a beginner’s guide to Sea of Stars, with some tips to help new players create a strong team and win battles.
How to master the combat in Sea of Stars
The game is easy to pick up and play. You lead a team of three characters, moving them around the screen using a joystick. When you encounter an enemy, the game switches to turn-based combat, where you control your pre-selected team. Build up the combo meter to unleash powerful combos!
1. Master timed hits & blocks
Hit the attack button right when your character attacks to deal extra damage. Also, press it when enemies attack to lessen the damage you receive. Getting the timing right consistently can save you a lot of healing items throughout the game.
2. Break enemy locks first
When an enemy prepares a powerful attack, symbols will show above their head – Slash, Blunt, Sun, and Moon. If you attack using the damage type that matches those symbols, you’ll either cancel the attack completely or make it weaker. If you break all the symbols, you’ll completely skip the enemy’s turn.
3. Use Live Mana orbs
Regular attacks release blue Mana orbs on the ground. You can collect up to three of these, and then use them to boost your next move – it’s a useful way to bypass locks without using magic points.
4. Sneak up on enemies
Attacking enemies from behind lets you perform a sneak attack, instantly granting you extra energy for a powerful first move before they can react.
Using the world as your advantage
If you’re just starting out, take your time and explore every part of the islands instead of trying to finish things quickly. You’ll find lots of useful items, secret paths, and rare collectibles if you venture off the beaten path. Getting a variety of equipment early on will help you understand how different elements work and build a well-rounded team.
1. HP & MP don’t auto-restore
Okay, so this game is different from a lot of other RPGs I’ve played. You don’t just automatically heal after every fight or when you save! You really need to use potions and, thankfully, the food you cook to get your HP back. And here’s a neat trick: you actually get MP back by just attacking normally, so don’t use up all your special moves right away or you’ll be stuck with nothing when you really need them!
2. Cook meals before tough fights
Use your food regularly – don’t save it for later! Before big fights, cook meals that replenish both health and magic. Food is great because it doesn’t use any magic points, so your characters can keep attacking without running out of energy.
3. Don’t grind, but explore
Sea of Stars doesn’t require repetitive grinding to progress. The game’s areas adjust to your level, and you’ll earn much more experience in new locations. Instead of grinding, simply play through the game and explore each area completely to advance.
4. You can skip encounters
You’ll find enemies exploring the world, but they aren’t just randomly appearing. If your health is low, you can usually sneak past them. There’s nothing wrong with avoiding a battle if your team is struggling!
Sea of Stars Tips and Tricks for Beginners
If you’re just starting Sea of Stars, here are some helpful tips to get you off to a great start.
- Prioritize melee for Valere and magic for Zale.
- Use relics to maximize your team’s advantages in the battles.
- The game does not expect or require exp farming from you, but you can if you want. Good spots are where the enemies are close to an entry/exit of the zone.
- Money is hard to come by early on. Don’t buy food items; you should be able to make just about anything you’d need from ingredients you find while walking around.
- Fish are infinitely respawnable by leaving and reentering a pond.
- Always pick MP on level up when it’s available. It makes a big difference, especially early on.
- Talk to NPC back and forth, most of them have almost useless dialogue lines, but a fair amount are saying things that matter (especially late game), and that will help you find hidden secrets.
Final Thoughts
Don’t hurry – savor the experience and build your team gradually. Patience and careful strategy will help you create a strong, capable squad that can overcome any challenge. It’s okay to make mistakes at first; each battle is a learning opportunity, teaching you how the game works and how to defeat your enemies.
