10 TV Show Flops That Turned Out to Be Huge Hits

M*A*S*H (1972-1983)
The TV show MASH is now a classic, celebrated as one of the greatest shows ever made. It was a funny and clever comedy that also offered insights into what was happening in the world. However, it almost didn’t make it past its first season. Ratings were so low that the cast thought the show would be canceled after the initial run of episodes. Luckily, when the network re-aired the episodes, people started watching, and CBS decided to give MASH a second chance. That decision turned out to be a huge success, and the show went on to become a cultural phenomenon.

Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)
Even devoted fans and those who only occasionally watched will agree that the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation felt a bit awkward. The show hadn’t quite found its footing yet, and the relationships between the crew of the Enterprise-D felt unnatural and hadn’t developed into the close friendships they eventually became. Because expectations were so high after the original Star Trek ended, many fans were confused and let down by this new take, but TNG eventually became one of the most beloved Star Trek series of all time.

Seinfeld (1989-1998)
It’s hard to believe now, but NBC almost cancelled Seinfeld after just four episodes! They thought the show was too strange and focused on local New York humor to appeal to a national audience. Luckily, NBC executive Ricky Ludwin, a 32-year veteran of the network, believed in the show and used money from his programming budget to fund four more episodes, completing the first season. Viewers loved it, leading NBC to order a second season and ultimately making Seinfeld a huge success. Ludwin had a knack for spotting great shows; he also helped launch The Office and Late Night with Conan O’Brien during his career.

Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000)
As a critic, I often think about shows that deserved more time, and Freaks and Geeks immediately comes to mind. It was sadly canceled after just one season, but honestly, sometimes that’s a blessing in disguise. It suffered from a messy rollout – only 12 of the 18 episodes actually aired before it was gone. But after that, something amazing happened: it found its audience. Word of mouth turned it into a genuine cult classic, and it’s been showered with praise ever since. What’s truly remarkable is looking at the cast now – James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel – they all became huge stars! And even though it’s set in an 80s high school, the show still feels incredibly relevant to the American teen experience today.

Firefly (2002)
Like Freaks and Geeks, it’s hard to know if Firefly would have become a classic with more seasons, but Joss Whedon’s short-lived series is consistently remembered as a show that ended too soon. Starring Nathan Fillion, Firefly brilliantly blended space opera with western themes, delivering a strong anti-war message and a fresh take on life in space. Despite strong DVD sales and a dedicated fanbase that has only grown over time, the show was canceled after only 11 of its 14 episodes aired, likely due to Fox airing the first few episodes in the wrong order. Its popularity eventually led to a sequel film, Serenity, released in 2005.

Arrested Development (2003-2006, 2013-2019)
From the start, Arrested Development received great reviews and awards, but after three seasons, Fox canceled it due to low ratings. While it was a popular show among a dedicated fanbase – owning the DVDs signaled good taste – that wasn’t enough to save it. Years later, Netflix noticed the show was gaining popularity through streaming and revived it in 2013, allowing the Bluth family to continue their hilariously chaotic lives for two more seasons.

The Office (2005-2013)
It’s hard to believe now, but The Office got off to a rocky start. The first season wasn’t very good – it closely copied the British version and the characters weren’t engaging. Many fans even skip the first season altogether. The show really found its footing in Season 2 when it started to develop its own unique style, leading to the hilarious situations and memorable characters that made it a huge hit.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005- )
Initially, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia struggled to find an audience. It premiered after a poorly received show about eating disorders and didn’t immediately attract viewers. However, a deal to stream on Hulu and repeat broadcasts on Comedy Central helped it gain traction. A key moment was the unexpected addition of Danny DeVito as a regular cast member—a move Rob McElhenney described as bringing significant star power to the show—playing Charlie Day’s character’s eccentric father. From there, Always Sunny became a huge success, and it’s now in its 16th season, continuing to both fascinate and shock audiences with the outrageous and often appalling behavior of its characters.

Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
I remember when Breaking Bad first came out – things didn’t look promising! The very first episode aired after a long NFL playoff game ran late, and the writers’ strike cut the first season short, meaning they only made seven episodes instead of the nine they’d planned. Usually, shows lose viewers after the first episode, but Breaking Bad was different. It actually gained more and more fans as it went on. Then, once people started talking about how amazing it was, and it became available on Netflix, it really took off. By the end, everyone agreed it was one of the best TV shows ever made – and I was definitely one of those fans!

You (2018- )
Look, usually when a show features a protagonist who… well, disposes of people, it doesn’t have a long life. But You defied all expectations! It started as a bit of a guilty pleasure on Lifetime, a soapy thriller that unexpectedly blew up when Netflix got its hands on it. Honestly, it was a total streaming success story – one of those shows Netflix rescued from cancellation. Lifetime didn’t renew it, but Netflix saw the buzz and jumped in, and now it’s become one of their biggest, longest-running originals. It’s amazing how far this show has come!
