Scream 8 gets exciting update with cancelled Buffy revival writers

Good news for fans of the Scream series! After the success of Scream 7 earlier this year, a new Scream movie – the eighth installment – is moving forward with two writers now on board.

The horror movie earned over $209 million in theaters, and now producers are quickly moving forward with plans for a sequel. Kevin Williamson, who created the series, has also said he’d like to make an eighth film.

It looks like the project is moving forward! According to Deadline, Lilla and Nora Zuckerman will be writing the screenplay. They’re the showrunners for Rian Johnson’s Poker Face and have also written for shows like Suits and Fringe.

There’s no director for the next Scream movie yet, and it’s unclear who from the cast will be back. The most recent film, Scream 7, brought back several familiar actors like Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard.

Although the exact storyline remains a secret, director and co-writer of Scream 7, Christopher Williamson, told Variety that he and the team have many ideas for where they want to take the Scream franchise in the future.

Look, if this movie does well and people actually want to see it, I’m pretty sure we’ll be making a sequel. The studio definitely wants to, and honestly, everyone involved had a blast making it – it was just a really fun project, so we’d all be up for doing it again.

Although Williamson seemed hopeful about another Scream movie, Courteney Cox suggested she likely wouldn’t be returning as Gale Weathers. She said, “Everyone should want to do another Scream – it’s a fun and enjoyable experience.” However, she added, “I don’t think I’ll be able to participate in the next one, but things could change.”

The Zuckermans wrote the script for a potential new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, intended as a follow-up to the original. Sarah Michelle Gellar was planned to return as Buffy, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong was also cast in a role.

I was really excited about the planned revival, especially with Chloé Zhao directing and so many of the original cast coming back! But sadly, Sarah Michelle Gellar just announced on social media that Hulu decided not to move forward with the pilot. It’s a huge disappointment, honestly.

Scream 8 has no release date.
