Scream 7 had an alternate ending that really did bring back Stu from the dead

Scream 7 spoilers follow.

Now that Matthew Lillard is back in the Scream movies with a bigger part – not just a quick appearance – many fans wondered if his character, Stu Macher, had somehow come back to life.

So in Scream 7, it turned out I was right – Stu Macher was still alive! And even worse, he called Sidney Prescott-Evans, looking for a chat about the old days… while revealing he was Ghostface again. Seriously, that guy just won’t stay dead!

So, after a seriously wild ride, it turns out that ‘Stu’ wasn’t actually Stu at all! It was a deepfake – a really convincing fake created by Marco Davis, the guy Ethan Embry plays. Which means the real Stu is still gone, unfortunately. It was a total mind-blower when I found out!

Even so, Kevin Williamson, the creator of the series and co-writer/director of Scream 7, shared that they filmed a different ending where Stu was actually still alive. However, viewers who previewed the film preferred the ending where Stu was killed off, so that’s the one they used.

When I first read the script, I wondered how they would make it believable – how could the character still be alive? I also questioned whether some viewers would be let down to find out he wasn’t a real person, but rather created using AI, he told Esquire.

We were filming a scene, and to be honest, we shot it with multiple endings. We had an extra little scene prepared just in case. But surprisingly, the people watching decided they wanted the character to die.

It feels more believable and authentic. The idea that he’s still alive is a bit hard to accept, but in today’s world with convincing AI technology, anything seems possible, according to Williamson, who also praised Lillard as a kind person.

It’s so cool to see Courtney Cox back as Gale Weathers! This isn’t the first time she’s returned to the Scream universe since the original movie. She’s made appearances in Scream 2 and the 2022 Scream movie, which was actually the fifth film in the series.

Williamson remembered telling Lillard he wanted to work with him again, and the two discussed it while Lillard was finishing up his role in the film The Life of Chuck, with director Mike Flanagan also present.

Williamson remembered that Lillard was present and he immediately worried Lillard would ask him about something. Throughout the entire evening, Lillard repeatedly urged him to bring Stu back, constantly talking about it.

I finally told them, ‘Look, Stu has to stay dead. It just wouldn’t make sense for him to be alive, and I don’t want to ruin the show by doing something so unbelievable. I’m willing to take a small risk, but not a huge one that would completely destroy everything.’

Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, Scream 7 has performed very well in theaters. It had a record-breaking opening weekend for the Scream series, and this success is leading to discussions about making another film.
