Scarlett Johansson Makes TV Debut In Prime Video’s Just Cause Remake

Scarlett Johansson is stepping into television lead roles with a new crime thriller coming to Prime Video. While she’s been a major movie star for years, this marks her first time leading a dramatic TV series.

Like many other famous actors of her generation, Scarlett Johansson is now moving into television with a new version of Just Cause for Prime Video. She’s also helping produce the show, which is being developed with Christy Hall, who co-created the series I Am Not Okay with This.

Scarlett Johansson is known for strong performances in crime thrillers, appearing in films like Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige and the action-packed Lucy. Because of her experience with the genre, she seems perfectly suited to play Madi Cowart, the lead character in Just Cause, which has been reimagined with a female protagonist.

This new Prime Video series isn’t the first time Scarlett Johansson has played a reporter investigating a murder – she previously took on the role in the 2006 film Scoop. The show will also feature collaborations with Cord Jefferson, known for American Fiction, and John Wells, the showrunner of The West Wing.

With talented people leading the way, Just Cause has a strong chance of becoming one of the best thriller series on Prime Video. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Scarlett Johansson has been involved with John Katzenbach’s popular novel. She actually appeared in an earlier movie adaptation of Just Cause all the way back in 1995.

Scarlett Johansson Will Star In Prime Video’s Just Cause Remake

The new Prime Video series, Just Cause, is a first for Scarlett Johansson – it’s the first major TV drama she’s ever starred in. Aside from a small role she had as a child on the show The Client, and a brief cameo on Entourage, this marks her first significant venture into television acting.

Scarlett Johansson’s film Lucy recently became a hit on Netflix, showing she remains incredibly popular with audiences. This makes it a great moment for her to start appearing in TV shows, and she’s already deeply involved in creating the Prime Video series Just Cause, having worked on it from the beginning.

Johansson’s company, These Pictures, is helping to create the series, and she’s currently the only confirmed cast member. Because the show is still being developed, it’s expected to come out in either 2027 or 2028.

Johansson Also Starred In The Movie Just Cause As A Child Actor

What’s fascinating about Scarlett Johansson starring in Prime Video’s Just Cause is that it’s a remake of the 1995 film where she began her acting career. She played Katie Armstrong, the daughter of Sean Connery’s character, when she was just 10 years old – it was only her second on-screen role.

This Just Cause movie, a nineties thriller, wasn’t very well-received due to its weak plot and disappointing ending. However, it’s part of an amazing coincidence: Scarlett Johansson is now recreating the same story in a TV series that she actually lived through as a child 31 years ago.

Johansson will be taking on a role previously played by Sean Connery, who portrayed her character’s father in the film. Given her current status as a leading actress in everything she appears in, she’s likely to feel a strong sense of familiarity while filming Prime Video’s Just Cause.

Prime Video’s Just Cause Will Be Very Different From The Movie

Prime Video has several exciting upcoming shows based on previously released properties, including Just Cause. In 2026, remakes of Carrie and Tomb Raider will debut, followed shortly by a new show starring Scarlett Johansson.

Don’t expect the new TV series, based on John Katzenbach’s novel, to resemble the 1995 film. This version will stick much closer to the original book. Instead of the movie’s character, Johansson will play Madi Cowart, a Florida reporter from the book, who is looking into whether a man on death row is actually innocent.
