My Dearest Darlings, Gather ‘Round!
In a world where WhatsApp calls are as treacherous as a backstabbing socialite and crypto wallets are the new jewel-encrusted safes, Operation FRONTIER+ III has swept through like a Noël Coward wit at a dull dinner party. Over 3,018 arrests, $752 million in scams, and enough drama to fill a West End theatre-all in a mere two months! Bravo, my intrepid police forces, bravo!
From Singapore to Hong Kong, Malaysia to the Maldives, our heroes in uniform have frozen 102,000 bank accounts and recovered a tidy $161 million. Scammers, it seems, have been busy impersonating everyone from CEOs to company chairmen, all while sipping their martinis and plotting their next move. How utterly tiresome.
One poor soul, a Singapore CEO, was duped into transferring $36.3 million via a WhatsApp call. Darling, if only he’d taken a page from my book and verified the chairman’s voice with a quick “Madam, is that you?” Alas, $26.5 million winged its way to Hong Kong faster than a Coward quip at a bad play.
And let’s not forget the business email scam, where $6.6 million was rerouted to Oman. Really, darlings, if you’re going to steal, at least have the decency to use a more exotic location. Dubai and Oman? How passé.
Peggy Pao, the Director of the Commercial Affairs Department, quipped that their success depends on “the depth of the relationships we build.” Darling, if only all relationships were as fruitful as this! Though I must say, tracking stablecoins through digital wallets sounds about as fun as a toothache.
As investigations continue, one can only imagine the next act in this grand farce. Meanwhile, Singapore’s new Cyber Command unit is set to debut in July, promising to be the leading lady in the fight against cybercrime. Let’s hope they bring a touch of Coward flair to the proceedings.
