Sagar Radia on Rishi’s Intense and Chaotic Day in Industry Season 3

As a seasoned movie buff who has seen countless characters grapple with their demons, I must say that Sagar Radia‘s portrayal of Rishi Ramdani in “Industry” is nothing short of captivating. His character’s journey in the fourth episode of season three, titled “White Mischief,” is a testament to the power of storytelling and the depth that can be achieved even within the confines of a single episode.

For the initial two seasons of HBO’s series “Industry“, we’ve come across Rishi Ramdani, portrayed by Sagar Radia, as a mid-level trader at Pierpoint whose colorful remarks frequently test the limits of professional decorum. The show, “Industry“, is a fast-paced drama that maintains its intensity throughout, and in some aspects, Rishi’s humorous remarks, tense demeanor, and coarse language have added a touch of humor to the series. In season three of “Industry“, an episode dedicated to Rishi’s life offers a more detailed exploration of his character.

In the fourth episode of the season, set to broadcast on September 1st, we delve into Rishi’s life as he navigates an exceptionally demanding and tumultuous day, revealing aspects of his personality beyond his high-pressure occupation handling substantial financial transactions.

In a conversation with TIME, Radia mentions that he’s noticed a natural self-assurance developing in Rishi as his character evolves through the series. He was taken aback when he discovered he would be the main lead for an episode, yet felt prepared to take on the task. “When I received a script like that,” he explains, “I felt, ‘Alright, let’s dive in and get started.'”

The episode titled “White Mischief” opens with Pierpoint’s reputation taking a hit following the disastrous ESG conference in the last episode, coupled with the collapse of Lumi. Rishi gathers with his colleagues to brainstorm their next move, proposing a risky trade that surprisingly gains approval from the team. However, things aren’t smooth sailing for Rishi; he’s celebrating Boxing Day with his family and newborn child, but is dealing with a declined payment notice on his phone and a nosebleed, which suggests he might be under too much stress or drug usage.

Later in the day, Rishi and his spouse find themselves at home when there’s a knock on the door. It’s Vinay, searching for Rishi due to an outstanding financial obligation. Throughout the episode, we discover that Rishi is entangled in £200,000 worth of gambling debts, which explains why he took such a risky investment approach at Pierpoint. Meanwhile, HR is on his case regarding his inappropriate language, and Eric Tao (Ken Leung) from the CPS desk is growing more concerned about the high-risk trade.

Radia found the process of filming the episode challenging for several reasons. Apart from the demanding nature and bodily aspects of the scenes, the episode was filmed out of order, a common practice in professional productions. To ensure they captured the desired emotional impact, he relied on director Zoé Wittock’s guidance. He also acknowledged the creators Konrad Kay and Mickey Down for cultivating a cooperative work environment that facilitated finding the right emotional tone. One of the early scenes filmed is actually shown later in the episode, and Radia explains, “When you’re thrust into an emotionally intense situation on the first day, if things aren’t working out, you don’t get frustrated because they reassure you, ‘We’ll figure it out, let’s try again.'”

Despite being confident about his trade prediction, Rishi’s emotions – anger and apprehension – are escalating rapidly. He abruptly leaves Pierpoint to seek out Vinay, who happens to have a companion in the car. As he speaks with Rishi, Vinay poses a question that seems to be on everyone’s mind: “Given your background in finance, how is it possible that you’re financially strapped?”

It appears that Vinay shows compassion towards Rishi by providing him with additional funds. However, Rishi rejects this gesture and instead uses the money intended for Vinay to gamble. He ends up winning a substantial amount, gaining access to an exclusive club, getting into a brawl, continuing to gamble, and eventually losing everything he had won.

The situation deteriorates further at Pierpoint, leading to another meeting regarding anonymous complaints about Rishi’s inappropriate language. At this juncture, Rishi is disheartened, sporting a swollen face, a shiner, and a bruised self-esteem, desperately seeking support from Anraj who fears him. Fortunately, the risky investment proves to be profitable—Rishi earns millions of pounds.

Near the close of the episode, Rishi and his spouse, Diana, engage in a heated argument. In the heat of it, Rishi discloses the extent of his debt burden, to which Diana offers financial assistance from her earnings at work and stands by him. Later, he informs Vinay that he has repaid his loan, but persists in betting both his money and life away.

Right now, Radia is expressing that this particular instance was the most challenging. She explains that it’s a culmination of all the troubles Rishi has encountered so far. Notably, she quotes Diana, saying “It’s far simpler to cultivate robust young men than mend damaged ones.”

I’ve observed Rishi go through a similar situation, and she encourages us by expressing that he’s pondering about his moral compass and the kind of person he aspires to become from now on.
