Ryan Reynolds’ Thriller The Captive Finds Redemption on Netflix 12 Years Later

Ryan Reynolds is now closely associated with his role as Deadpool, but he’s actually starred in a number of excellent films that haven’t gotten the attention they deserve. While he first became known for comedic roles like Van Wilder, his attempts at thrillers, such as The Captive, weren’t very successful.

The thriller film, directed by Atom Egoyan and co-written with David Fraser, came out in 2014. While it competed for the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year, it didn’t become a well-known role for Reynolds and largely went unnoticed. The Captive Is Among Ryan Reynolds’ Lowest-Rated Films

The new release, The Captive, quickly gained popularity with viewers in the U.S., entering the charts at number eight on March 13th. It soon climbed to fifth place the next day, jumping three spots in the rankings.

The thriller was on track to reach the No. 5 spot, but its future success isn’t guaranteed. The top chart positions are currently held by several popular titles, including Dave Bautista’s Trap House and Scarlett Johansson’s Jurassic World Rebirth. These films are all performing very well, and Reynolds has a significant challenge ahead if he wants to outperform them.

Despite its poor initial reception, the film’s recent revival is noteworthy. While The Captive is among Ryan Reynolds’ lowest-rated movies, it’s certainly not his worst. That title belongs to a film released just a year earlier, which received extremely negative reviews from both critics (13%) and audiences (38%). Even one of his most well-known roles, National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, only scored 18%.

Critics gave The Captive a 28% approval rating, which is actually better than the 25% received by 2011’s Green Lantern. However, audiences weren’t as impressed, giving it a score of only 34% – making it one of Ryan Reynolds’ lowest-rated films with viewers.

The TV series The Capture doesn’t follow a straightforward timeline. The entire story unfolds over eight years, and all the events happen during the winter in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Eight years after a young girl vanishes, detectives uncover unsettling evidence suggesting she might still be alive.

The thriller featured a strong cast, including Bruce Greenwood, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast, and Ryan Reynolds.

What’s Next for Ryan Reynolds?

Ryan Reynolds recently starred in the successful 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine, which was a major achievement for both him and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, things are now complicated for Reynolds, as he’s involved in a legal dispute: his wife, Blake Lively, is suing director and co-star Justin Baldoni.

Ryan Reynolds is known for juggling several projects at once, but he doesn’t have many confirmed upcoming roles right now. Although it’s still unconfirmed if he’ll appear in this year’s big superhero film, Avengers: Doomsday, he is set to star in the Apple TV+ action comedy Mayday, alongside Kenneth Branagh.
