Have we seen the last of Deadpool?
Deadpool the character is incredibly popular, and Ryan Reynolds clearly loves playing him, so it’s highly unlikely we’ve seen the last of him. However, the future of the Deadpool movie franchise is also bright. After two successful solo films under Fox, Reynolds teamed up with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine for the 2024 hit Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $1.3 billion around the world.
Given how well the first Deadpool movie did financially, many expected Marvel to quickly start working on a sequel. However, Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, doesn’t seem eager to make another Deadpool or Deadpool & Wolverine film. He recently mentioned on Today that he’s exploring ideas for the character, but envisions Deadpool appearing more as a helper in other movies going forward.
So, the creator basically said he has some ideas floating around, but he doesn’t plan on making this character the main focus anymore. He sees him as more of a team player – someone who shines when he’s with other characters, rather than being the star himself. It sounds like he’s definitely going to stay around, just not as the central figure of the story.
You can see Reynolds’ Today interview below.
It’s interesting to hear Reynolds’ thoughts, especially since Marvel Comics hasn’t always seen things the same way. While Deadpool has been part of teams like X-Force and the Avengers at times, he’s usually featured in his own solo comic books. In fact, he’s even destroyed the entire Marvel Universe a few times – definitely not typical team player behavior!
I think Ryan Reynolds is onto something with wanting Deadpool to be a supporting character now. He and Hugh Jackman had amazing chemistry with that dynamic – Deadpool being the talkative one and Wolverine being all serious. He’s probably hoping for something similar going forward. I’d love to see Deadpool in an X-Force movie, honestly. It would be huge for that team, which a lot of people outside of comic fans don’t even know! The only thing is, Reynolds makes a ton of money playing Deadpool, so it might be tough to justify paying him as a supporting player in a spinoff unless the rest of the team is made up of newer faces. It’s a tricky situation, but I’m hopeful!
Marvel and Ryan Reynolds might team up in the future, but for now, Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in theaters on December 18, 2026. It’s currently unknown whether Reynolds will appear in that film or its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, which is planned for 2027.
The Most Shocking Marvel Cameos

12. Patton Oswalt as Pip the Troll
The movie Eternals wasn’t a standout success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – some might even say it was the weakest. However, it ended with two unexpected cameos that surprised a lot of viewers. Suddenly, the Eternals’ spaceship is visited by two uninvited guests. The first is Pip the Troll, a fun-loving, hard-drinking space hero who’s known for working with Warlock and the Infinity Watch, and is voiced by comedian Patton Oswalt (who also writes Marvel comics). We’ll reveal who the second surprise guest is shortly…

11. Seth Green as Howard the Duck
Most studios would have abandoned the character after the poorly received Howard the Duck movie. That’s why his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – a quick cameo after the credits of Guardians of the Galaxy – was such a fun surprise. He’s popped up several times since then, always voiced by Seth Green.

10. Evan Peters as Ralph Bohner
Evan Peters was known for playing Quicksilver in the X-Men movies made by Fox. However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Aaron Taylor-Johnson originally played Quicksilver, but his character died in Avengers: Age of Ultron. So, when Evan Peters appeared as Quicksilver in WandaVision, it was a huge surprise! It was later revealed that he wasn’t actually Quicksilver, but Ralph Bohner, a neighbor brainwashed to believe he was Wanda’s deceased brother. WandaVision, which launched Phase Four of the MCU, showed audiences that anything was possible when it came to casting, hinting at the exciting possibilities of the Multiverse Saga.

9. Brett Goldstein as Hercules
As a big Marvel fan, I have to say, some of the cameos in the latest Thor movie felt a little predictable. Seeing Anthony Hopkins as Odin again? Not much of a shock. And honestly, Tom Hiddleston as Loki feels like a given at this point! But Hercules? That was a surprise. They really leaned into the comic book look – shirtless, full costume, the whole nine yards – and having Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso play him? Definitely didn’t see that coming!

8. Charlie Cox as Daredevil
As a huge Marvel fan, I always love a good cameo! But when I put together my list, I decided to exclude appearances by actors who’d already played their characters in the MCU before. Like, seeing Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner at the end of Iron Man 3 was cool, but he was already established as the Hulk by then. The only exception I made was Charlie Cox as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home. See, by 2021, it felt like the Netflix Marvel heroes—including Cox—were completely separate from the main MCU. He’d only played Daredevil in those Netflix shows, which the rest of the MCU seemed to ignore. That one scene with Peter Parker’s lawyer felt huge because it finally acknowledged those series, and it definitely paved the way for his return in Daredevil: Born Again.

7. Melissa McCarthy as the Actor Playing Hela
Beginning with Ragnarok, the Thor movies developed a humorous tradition of recapping the previous film using amateurish Asgardian stage productions. These plays featured unexpected cameos from famous actors. In Love and Thunder, for instance, Melissa McCarthy played Hela, the villain from Ragnarok. While McCarthy is hilarious, she wasn’t the obvious choice to portray such a frightening goddess of death.

6. John Krasinski as Reed Richards
Marvel fans have long wanted John Krasinski, known from The Office and A Quiet Place, to play Reed Richards, the leader of the Fantastic Four. While Marvel hasn’t officially announced the cast for the Fantastic Four movie, they gave fans a fun surprise with a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Krasinski appeared as the leader of the Illuminati, only to be quickly defeated by the Scarlet Witch. It seems getting what you want isn’t always what you expect, Marvel fans!

5. Harry Styles as Eros
The post-credits scene in Eternals featured a surprising appearance by Harry Styles, who played the character Eros. Eros is a powerful alien demigod – and Thanos’s brother – who was once part of the Avengers in Marvel Comics. His power is a bit unsettling: he can make people fall in love with him. Considering the film and Styles’ cameo weren’t hugely popular with audiences, it’s possible this power won’t translate as well to the screen as it does in the comics.

4. Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known for her hilarious roles in shows like Seinfeld and Veep, doesn’t immediately strike you as a villain. That’s what made her surprise appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – suddenly showing up to recruit John Walker – so unexpected and impactful. Like Melissa McCarthy, she’s a comedian who defied expectations by taking on a more sinister role.

3. Matt Damon as the Actor Playing Loki
Before Melissa McCarthy appeared as Hela in Thor: Love and Thunder, Matt Damon had a hilarious cameo in Thor: Ragnarok. He played an actor pretending to be Loki, and comically summarized the plot of Thor: The Dark World. Damon, a well-known actor capable of leading his own Marvel film, wasn’t the only surprise in that scene. Luke Hemsworth played Thor, and Sam Neill appeared as Odin as well.

2. Charlize Theron as Clea
Damon’s surprise appearance in a Marvel project is arguably the biggest cameo in the franchise’s history, considering his star power. The only actor who rivals that impact is Charlize Theron, who briefly appeared after the credits of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness as Clea, a significant love interest for Doctor Strange in the comics. While Clea’s appearance wasn’t entirely unexpected—she was bound to appear in a Doctor Strange movie eventually—casting an actress as famous as Theron and introducing her at the end of a film already dealing with the entire multiverse was a surprising move.

1. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
The post-credits scene in the first Iron Man movie, featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, is famous for hinting at a larger Marvel universe. Surprisingly, that scene wasn’t originally planned. Jackson wasn’t even contracted for future appearances until after the movie was released. Marvel cleverly misled audiences by removing the scene from early previews, making Fury’s appearance a genuine shock. For the past fifteen years, Marvel has been trying to recreate that same “wow” factor, but in my opinion, they haven’t quite succeeded.
