Ryan Gosling Suddenly Drops Out of Universal Sci-Fi Event Movie 1 Week After Casting

He’s become a very popular actor recently, largely due to the success of his science fiction movie. It’s not surprising that he quickly received another job offer after the film’s release.

Only a week after the theatrical release of Project Hail Mary, Universal Pictures announced that Ryan Gosling was no longer involved in an upcoming, currently unnamed film.

Ryan Gosling’s Next Project Is a New Star Wars Movie

Originally, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – the directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once – were set to direct the film. However, reports indicate that the Barbie actress is no longer involved.

Only a week after his new movie came out, the actor began talks with Universal Pictures about a new sci-fi film. The movie was approved for a California tax credit and planned to shoot in Los Angeles this summer, but the filming dates couldn’t be changed. Unfortunately, this meant the actor’s schedule didn’t work with the studio’s plans.

Following his work on Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling’s next film is Star Wars: Starfighter. Filming for Starfighter was completed before Gosling began promoting Project Hail Mary, suggesting the timing didn’t quite fit with his other commitments.

Shawn Levy is directing a new Star Wars movie, Starfighter, which will take place eight years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film will tell an original story within the Star Wars universe.

The movie will debut in cinemas on May 28, 2027, and features performances by Amy Adams, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.

Project Hail Mary Was a Major Success

Following a two-year hiatus after the action film The Fall Guy, Ryan Gosling returned to science fiction with Project Hail Mary. This was his second film focused on space, after 2018’s First Man, which told the story of astronaut Neil Armstrong and the historic mission to the moon.

Though the 2018 movie was well-received, many felt it didn’t get the attention it deserved. Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, aimed to change that with Project Hail Mary, which quickly became a popular success. This sci-fi film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a teacher who used to be a scientist. He wakes up with amnesia, completely alone on a spaceship.

When he begins to regain his memories, Grace learns he’s incredibly far from Earth – and holds the key to solving a crisis. He’s the only one who can discover what’s causing stars, including our sun, to die, and figure out how to stop it. While traveling through space, he befriends an alien named Rocky, and together they work to save both of their worlds.

Critics and audiences overwhelmingly love Project Hail Mary, giving it a 95% and 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. The film has earned $323.4 million globally on a $200 million budget, and while it hasn’t quite turned a profit yet, its performance so far has been incredibly successful.

Project Hail Mary is currently playing in theaters.
