The birthday surprise was not subtle.
Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling were seen together in public for the first time in over ten years on Thursday night. Gosling teamed up with Jimmy Fallon to surprise Mendes for her 52nd birthday.
Ryan Gosling appeared on the show to talk about his new movie, “Project Hail Mary,” where he plays a teacher who has to save the planet. He asked Jimmy Fallon to fill the audience with actual high school teachers, because Shawn Mendes is a big fan of teachers.
Someone also asked them to sing “Happy Birthday” to Mendes when she appeared on stage. It wasn’t certain if Gosling had requested the marching band that accompanied the song, but Fallon ended up giving him credit for the entire surprise, which seemed to include a confetti cannon.
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are famously private about their relationship. In fact, they haven’t been publicly seen together since promoting their 2013 film, “The Place Beyond the Pines.” It’s unclear whether they’re still partners or married, and honestly, it doesn’t seem to matter to them.
× He talked about the movie, of course, sharing some funny video from a promotional spot he recorded.
Steve Carell, while on “The Tonight Show,” recounted a bizarre experience with Amazon’s Alexa. He emphasized it wasn’t a promotion or a setup, but a genuine, unplanned event. He’d been asked to simply test Alexa by asking her questions about his movie, “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” and what happened next was completely unexpected – and he swore it was true.
In the video, Ryan Gosling playfully asked Alexa to explain why people should watch the movie in cinemas rather than waiting to stream it.
Alexa said the IMAX visuals were incredible. But what she said immediately after truly touched Gosling’s heart.
Alexa shared that Eva Mendes described the film as a masterpiece, saying it captures the special feeling of seeing a movie in a theater – something you can’t quite replicate at home.
“That Eva Mendes is great, isn’t she?” Gosling said in his trademark slight-smirk delivery.
He was saying she’s an incredibly versatile actress who doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves. He specifically mentioned her early work in ‘Training Day’ and her moving performance in ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ – a film they both starred in – as examples of how she consistently brings a genuine and heartfelt quality to all her characters. Gosling excitedly thanked him for the compliment at that moment.
Gosling then kissed Alexa, a red plastic device displaying an image from the book “Project Hail Mary” on her speaker.
Alexa added that she admires how the actress has prioritized her family by taking a break from acting, which says a lot about her values.
Gosling wholeheartedly agreed, adding that he’s been with Mendes since 2011 and they have two daughters together. It’s unclear if they’re actually married, though. And the fact that he kissed Alexa definitely adds another layer to the situation. Alexa is known for being ambitious and resourceful.
Whether he was married or not, Ryan Gosling was determined to make Mendes’s 52nd birthday special. She was actually backstage, preparing to thank a group of teachers in the audience for their hard work. Someone then led her onto the set, where Gosling warmly greeted her with a “Hi, sweetheart” and guided her to the center of the stage, holding her hand the whole time.
Mendes, surprised to be speaking on stage, immediately launched into a heartfelt tribute to teachers. She told the assembled educators, “I love teachers so much – we all owe you so much. You’re underpaid and truly amazing. I was lucky to have so many wonderful teachers myself.”
She then looked at Fallon and asked if he would edit out everything that had just happened. Apparently, she hadn’t realized why Gosling had directed her to stand on that specific spot on the floor for the cameras.
Nope, the host said. We love this.
Mendes continued, speaking quickly and with a lot of energy. “I was lucky to have so many wonderful teachers guide me, and I just want to express my gratitude to all of you.”
Fallon gently reminded her it was her birthday. Then, Gosling noted that several band directors were in the audience.
Fallon introduced the North Bergen High School marching band, explaining they were there to play ‘Happy Birthday’ for Eva Mendes.
A group of around twenty marching band members, all in uniform, surprised Eva by playing “Happy Birthday.” Two of them held up a banner wishing her a happy birthday, and the rest of the band played the song. Everyone in the audience sang along and clapped, and Mendes joined in too.
As a finale, yup, confetti blasted out over those onstage. And Fallon gave credit where it was due.
He pointed to Ryan Gosling, and Eva Mendes immediately turned to him, cupping his face and whispering something in his ear. Fans probably won’t see much more public displays of affection from the couple – perhaps not until a milestone birthday like her 65th or 70th. It’s even possible that future AI technology will be needed to confirm if they ever actually got married.
Just so you know, those teachers were the recipients of the birthday gift last night. After the show was filmed, Fallon surprised them with tickets to a special showing of “Project Hail Mary,” and they were clearly thrilled.
The “Tonight Show” and Ryan Gosling really brightened people’s day on Thursday, especially Eva Mendes!
“Project Hail Mary” hits theaters March 20.
