The British drama Dark River, featuring Ruth Wilson and Sean Bean, is now available to watch for free in the UK. Released in 2017, the film tells the story of Alice, played by Wilson, who goes back to Yorkshire after her father passes away to try and secure the family farm.
In Yorkshire, Alice unexpectedly runs into her brother, Joe (Mark Stanley), and he’s upset to see her.
Rowan Bean plays Richard Bell, the father of Alice and Joe. We see him either lying on his deathbed or through memories from the past.

The cast also includes Esmé Creed-Miles as young Alice, alongside Joe Dempsie, Dean Andrews, and Aiden McCullough as young Joe.
I was so excited to hear that Clio Barnard’s film is now available to watch for free! You can stream it on Channel 4’s streaming service – it originally aired last night on Film4, but now it’s easy to catch if you missed it. There are ads, but hey, free movie!
What to Read Next
Critics generally loved Dark River, giving it an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 62 reviews. This makes it the second-highest rated film starring Wilson on the site, after Locke, where she did voice work.
Both The Irish Times and The Seattle Times praised the film, with the former calling it a strong ‘murder ballad’ and the latter describing it as a disturbing and unforgettable experience.
According to The Observer, the story delicately portrays how a past trauma can slowly and subtly affect someone’s life, much like pollution spreading through the soil and water.

According to Variety, the film is nearly flawless in its technical aspects and acting. They especially praised Ruth Wilson, noting that she finally has a leading role in a movie that showcases her exceptional talent.
According to The Independent, the film is powerfully intense and doesn’t offer much in the way of lightheartedness, though it remains quite moving.
According to The Financial Times, everything feels unoriginal. This includes the beautiful but overcast landscapes – which seem to contradict the creator’s claim of not wanting to idealize nature – and characters who are defined solely by their backstories.
Dark River is available to stream on Channel 4.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant 100-page tribute to Harry Styles, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online.
