The guy running things is Peter Ocko, who did a fantastic job with Lodge 49, so I have high hopes he’ll do right by this reboot.
The new movie’s story is very similar to the 1987 film. It centers around a large technology company that persuades a city to use a powerful robot as a police officer. This robot isn’t just programmed – it contains the memories and personality of a respected officer who died in the line of duty. Viewers familiar with the original will notice echoes of Omni Consumer Products, the all-powerful corporation from the first movie which controlled everything including the police and advanced robots.
James Wan, a prominent horror director, is producing the series through his production company, Blumhouse Atomic Monster, with Michael Clear and Rob Hackett. To stay true to the source material, they’ve also included Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner – the original creators and writers of the story. Danielle Bozzone will co-executive produce and manage the overall project.
Honestly, I’m super hyped about this! The original movie still feels relevant today, and the producer gets that. He says the big questions it asked about tech, who we are, and where our loyalties lie are even more important now, which is totally true. He wants to stay true to what made the original great, but also give us something new for today’s audiences. Peter Friedlander from Amazon MGM Studios agrees – he thinks it’s a really smart and thought-provoking look at how we deal with technology and power, and I can definitely see that.
For almost forty years, RoboCop has remained popular in pop culture. Peter Weller first played the iconic character in the original two movies, then Robert Burke took on the role for the third film in 1993. Since then, the franchise has expanded with various animated series, live-action shows, comics, and a 2014 movie starring Joel Kinnaman. Recently, fans enjoyed exploring the RoboCop world again with the video game RoboCop: Rogue City. A new RoboCop series is in development at Amazon, but details about who will star and when it will be released haven’t been revealed yet.
