Ripple & Luxembourg: A Match Made in Fintech Heaven? 😇

One gathers that Ripple, that rather insistent purveyor of digital financial solutions, has been cultivating connections in high places. Specifically, Luxembourg. The implication, of course, is of ‘momentum’ and ‘expanding ambitions’- a vocabulary one encounters rather too frequently in these breathless dispatches from the world of cryptocurrency. Honestly, one would think the fate of Western civilisation hung upon it. 🙄

Ripple Attempts Charming Luxembourg’s Finance Chief

A delegation from Ripple – one Mr. Stuart Alderoty, Chief Legal Officer (a title which sounds suspiciously like an apology in advance) and Ms. Cassie Craddock, Managing Director for Europe – descended upon Luxembourg’s Finance Ministry. The purpose? To demonstrate their ‘progress’ towards acquiring a license to operate in that undeniably glamorous principality. One pictures a great deal of powerpoint presentations and promises of ‘innovation’.

This little expedition unfolds against the backdrop of MiCA, the EU’s attempt to corral the unruly beast of crypto into some semblance of order. Minister Gilles Roth, a man who clearly has time for such meetings, took to X (formerly Twitter, a platform one reserves for announcements regarding luncheon arrangements) to proclaim his ‘commitment to digital innovation’. How… delightful.

Great meeting with Ripple, as they advance toward securing their license to operate in Luxembourg. We discussed their ambitions in Europe and Luxembourg, and I reaffirmed our commitment to digital innovation.

Mr. Alderoty, naturally, concurred, noting the EU’s ‘comprehensive rules’ (one suspects ‘comprehensive’ is code for ‘infuriatingly complex’). He added, with a positively dazzling lack of modesty, that Ripple was ‘excited’ about their future in Luxembourg. One imagines a celebratory glass of something bubbly is in order.🥂

Ms. Craddock, equally effusive, observed that Luxembourg had ‘the opportunity to take a global lead’ – a statement which, given the current state of affairs, feels rather like offering a life raft to someone already aboard the Titanic. She added, meaningfully, that she ‘came away feeling that Luxembourg really understands the opportunity ahead’. Which, one assumes, involves a great deal of regulatory paperwork. 🤦‍♀️

The conversation was extremely positive and I came away feeling that Luxembourg really understands the opportunity ahead.

The entire affair, naturally, is being presented as a sign of ‘closer cooperation’ and a potential boon to Europe’s ambitions to become a “global center for regulated digital finance.” One suspects that the only thing being regulated with any degree of enthusiasm is the flow of optimistic press releases. Time, as ever, will tell. One does hope they remembered to bring a small gift for the Minister. A box of chocolates, perhaps? 🍫
