Riot Platforms (RIOT), a big name in the world of Bitcoin digging, has just shaken up the scene by selling a tidy sum of 3,778 Bitcoins in the first quarter of 2026.
According to their latest update from the heart of the operation, this fire sale raked in a staggering $289.5 million, averaging roughly $76,626 per coin-enough to buy a decent estate… or a few nice blackboards in a school.
Miners and Firms Dump Bitcoin Holdings
That deal trimmed their pile to 15,680 Bitcoins as of March 31, down by a respectable 18% from the 19,223 Bitcoins they held a year earlier. Arkham, that clever blockchain sleuth, noted that Riot moved another 500 Bitcoins in early April, dropping the count further. In short, they’re on a bit of a crypto cleanse.
Meanwhile, their production took a modest dip: they mined 1,473 Bitcoins in Q1, a 4% drop from the same period in 2025. Think of it as a modest drizzle on a sunny day.

Riot’s surrender to the market isn’t a lone wolf scenario. MARA Holdings gave up 15,133 Bitcoins for around $1.1 billion. The Genius Group went all‑in by liquidating its entire 84.15‑Bitcoin treasury on April 1. Nakamoto Holdings trimmed its stash by about 284 Bitcoins in March, netting roughly $20 million.
Bitcoin Demand Shrinks, But Buying Has Not Stopped
On‑chain data show a clear squeeze: the apparent demand for Bitcoin fell to a negative 63,000 coins by late March, according to analytics firm CryptoQuant. Still, the buying cough hasn’t gone away entirely.
Once named MicroStrategy, Strategy bought 44,377 Bitcoins in March alone, making up 94 % of all public‑company purchases that month-a kind of corporate apron-first dance with the digital gold.
Tokyo‑listed Metaplanet joined the cup runneth over, snapping up 5,075 Bitcoins for roughly $398 million over Q1, bringing its total reserves to 40,177 Bitcoins.
The contrast between the cryptocurrency savants who pile under dark clouds and the firms that are selling like frantic shoplifters paints a picture where interest exists but is increasingly squeezing into fewer pockets.
