Riot disables new VALORANT block feature after players notice it still reveals those with a hidden ID
As a seasoned VALORANT player with countless hours under my belt, I must admit that I was initially thrilled when Riot Games introduced the block feature in patch 9.06. It seemed like a much-needed tool to avoid harassment and maintain privacy – something every gamer could appreciate. However, it appears that the implementation of this feature has led us down a stream sniping rabbit hole.
With VALORANT patch 9.06, the newly implemented block feature has been momentarily deactivated as it was found to expose concealed usernames.
In many modern games and apps, users can conceal their usernames from other players for reasons like privacy or to avoid stream sniping if they’re well-known streamers. Interestingly, Riot Games included a block feature in VALORANT, but it seems to have inadvertently made stream sniping less difficult.
The function of the ‘block’ option is designed to prevent interactions with other players by stopping incoming messages, friend requests, and disabling their voice chats during gameplay. However, they will still be encountered during matchmaking process.
Using this tool is really beneficial for avoiding unwanted harassment, especially during gameplay on VALORANT, as it reveals the identity of those who block you. Unfortunately, when your Riot ID remains hidden, this function isn’t accessible. Riot Games have temporarily disabled it due to technical issues until they can come up with a solution.
VALORANT block feature shows ID after blocking someone with ID hidden
In the latest update, version 9.06 of VALORANT, a new function was introduced that allows players to mute each other. However, as demonstrated in the following video by Lothar, it turns out that this muting feature could potentially aid stream snipers.
Even though blocking someone eliminates the opportunity for direct communication within the game, it doesn’t truly stop you from playing together because the blocked person can still recognize your in-game ID, even if it is concealed within the game. So, there isn’t much you can do to ensure complete isolation.
As a fan, imagine you’ve added TenZ to your block list in VALORANT. Although his in-game name isn’t visible, the block feature will still reveal that it’s him. Once you see him there, you can check if he’s streaming and then use his live stream as a sort of ‘snipe spot’, keeping an eye on his gameplay from afar!
