Ridley Scott’s $630M Sci-Fi Praised by Space Experts Returns as PVOD Hit in America

Ridley Scott’s popular sci-fi film, The Martian, is currently a hit on streaming platforms. Recent data from FlixPatrol shows it’s reached the top 10 movies on Vudu, landing at number 10.

This announcement arrives alongside the release of a new film similar in spirit to The Martian—both movies are adapted from novels by Andy Weir.

The Martian Is a Sci-Fi Survival Story

In the novel The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is mistakenly believed to be dead after a powerful storm on a Mars mission and is left behind. He actually survives, but finds himself completely alone on the dangerous planet. With very limited resources, he has to use his intelligence, humor, and scientific skills to survive, find a way to let Earth know he’s still alive, and hold on until a rescue mission can reach him.

Ridley Scott’s film The Martian was written by Drew Goddard and inspired by the novel of the same name by Andy Weir. Matt Damon plays the main character, Watney, and the film also features Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, and Mackenzie Davis.

Critics and viewers alike loved The Martian. It boasts a 91% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences agreeing at the same high score. Reviewers called the film intelligent, exciting, and well-made.

The movie The Martian was a financial success, bringing in $630.6 million worldwide. It was also critically acclaimed, receiving seven nominations at the Academy Awards, including a nomination for Best Picture.

Experts Have Also Praised The Martian

The film is praised for accurately portraying scientific concepts. Astrophysicist Paul M. Sutter, for example, discussed its realism in a video review.

Donald Glover perfectly captured how physicists and engineers explain complex ideas, according to Paul Sutter. He noted that Glover’s portrayal of Rich Purnell in The Martian accurately showed the tendency to use everyday objects to illustrate concepts – like saying, ‘Imagine this is the particle, and it moves over here.’ It’s a common way scientists explain their work.

He also complimented how The Martian realistically used physics to drive the story. Sutter explains that the biggest challenge in the movie—the long journey to Mars—was addressed with sound science. Because Mars is so far away and follows its own orbit, the movie cleverly used the concept of a ‘slingshot’ maneuver—using Earth’s gravity for a speed boost—to allow a quicker return trip than a direct launch would have allowed. This approach is based on solid, mathematically accurate orbital mechanics.

Sutter ended his review by giving The Martian his highest recommendation. He stated, “I’d give these scenes a perfect score – a 10 out of 10!” He enthusiastically praised the film as a celebration of science and how it can solve problems.

The Martian is available to purchase or rent now on PVOD services. It is also streaming on Peacock.
