Richard Greenberg dead at 67: The Tony-winning Take Me Out playwright is remembered for legacy on Broadway
Richard Greenberg, the Tony award-winning playwright behind Take Me Out, has died at age 67.
During the weekend, it was shared on social media by his friend and theater director, Robert Falls, that a native of New York had passed away.
Stricken with sadness upon learning about the demise of playwright Richard Greenberg. Over the past few years, we’ve been working closely together on his enchanting adaptation of Holiday, Philip Barry’s iconic American play – set to debut at the Goodman in February. This loss comes at a particularly difficult time during our collaboration. On Bluesky, he expressed this sentiment.
For more than three decades, I’ve found immense joy in knowing Rich and his work, which is brilliant, compassionate, and laugh-out-loud funny. The authenticity of his kindness was evident. His absence leaves a gaping void.
Actor Denis O’Hare, an American who won a Tony Award for playing Mason Marzac in ‘Take Me Out’, expressed a touching tribute to Greenberg via Instagram.
It’s hard to accept that the brilliant mind behind Richard Greenberg has passed away. His influence on me cannot be fully expressed in words, but I feel deeply indebted to him. He bestowed upon me the most precious gift – a captivating persona to embody in a delightful play.
O’Hare continued to commend his ex-colleague for introducing him to Lisa Peterson and Linda Emond, who he remembered meeting through Greenberg’s play ‘The Author’s Voice’ at Remains Theatre in 1987 during the “Sneaky Feelings” one-act festival.
‘I have a sneaky feeling of grief mixed with gratitude for this man. RIP Rich,’ he concluded.
At this time, a cause of death has not been publicly revealed.
As I paid my respects to the late playwright on social media, I found myself swept away by an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from fellow admirers. It seemed that everyone was eager to honor his legacy and acknowledge the profound impact he had on our collective thoughts for generations yet unborn.
‘Bidding adieu to playwright Richard Greenberg, creator of Take Me Out, The Assembled Parties and Three Days of Rain. A poetic storyteller who delved into the enigmas that define us as humans, he recognized that the past is not a distant land but an ever-present pulse within our current lives.’
‘Richard Greenberg, an acclaimed American playwright, has sadly passed away. His repertoire includes the prize-winning plays ‘TAKE ME OUT’ and ‘THREE DAYS OF RAIN’. He had a unique talent for portraying characters ranging from Major League baseball players to high society New Yorkers, all while infusing his work with humor and empathy. We mourn his departure.’
Beyond his popularity from “Take Me Out,” Greenberg is also recognized for penning plays such as “The Dazzle,” “The American Plan,” “Life Under Water,” and “The Author’s Voice.
As an ardent admirer, allow me to express my fascination for the captivating series, “Take Me Out.” This extraordinary production, featuring an exclusively male ensemble, chronicled the heartrending journey of a baseball superstar as he bravely navigated his path towards self-acceptance amidst a tumultuous season marred by racial strife and violence.

Besides writing these, he was responsible for penning the Broadway version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the script for the musical production called Far From Heaven as well.
Throughout the course of his acting career, over 25 of his plays were debuted not just on Broadway, but also Off-Broadway, off-off Broadway in New York City, and even eight times at the South Coast Repertory Theatre in Costa Mesa, California.
Greenberg, who was born in 1958, graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University.
In his educational journey, he specialized in creative writing under the tutelage of acclaimed American author Joyce Carol Oates, while sharing a living space with Greg Mankiw, who would later become an economics professor at Harvard University.
