Return to Paradise has a Death in Paradise cameo – but it wasn’t needed
As a gamer who’s been through his fair share of spin-offs and sequels, I must admit that the debut of Return to Paradise has left me quite impressed. Anna Samson’s Mackenzie Clarke is an intriguing protagonist, offering a unique blend of individuality, personality, and familiarity that resonates with the legacy of the original franchise.
Return to Paradise season 1 episode 1 spoilers follow.
The initial phase of the first season for “Return to Paradise” is proving to be captivating. The character played by Anna Samson, Mackenzie Clarke, serves as the focal point, infusing this fresh franchise entry with an intriguing blend of individuality, personality, and a sense of familiarity that’s keeping everyone talking.
Discussing a sense of relatability, a former Paraverse student visited Dolphin Cove, aiming to enhance the show’s connection to the cosmos. No, not Harry, although he did pop up… in a roundabout way.
In this conversation, we’re referring to Detective Inspector Jack Mooney from “Death in Paradise,” portrayed by Arlan O’Hanlon. He appears unexpectedly in London, which seems quite gloomy and dismal. It appears that Mooney had been a guiding figure for Mackenzie Clarke throughout their career.
Facing allegations of evidence tampering, the disgraced detective (DI) decided to return to her Australian residence and is now determined to restore her reputation. In this pursuit, she reaches out to one of the rare individuals she confides in.
Enter Mooney. It’s a special moment.
[Mackenzie] doesn’t have many close relationships or numerous friends,” Samson mentioned during an interview with Digital Spy and other reporters. “He (Samson) is one of the select few she cherishes, and this is evident through some brief scenes shown over the phone.
The setting accomplishes its purpose, reviving the growing thrill that started when hints suggesting his arrival surfaced. Specifically, it’s about the London cityscape and a peculiar lizard figurine on a table, looking remarkably like Harry Potter.
In this rephrased version, I will attempt to simplify the original sentence while maintaining its intended meaning: The scene is short and O’Hanlon appears just once later in the episode for a fleeting instant. However, it effectively highlights the connection between the two shows. To be frank, Mooney’s role wasn’t essential.
This change isn’t meant as an insult to his character. His exit, similar to departures of other detectives on “Death in Paradise,” left a significant impact on the series, bringing a mix of sadness and anticipation for a new DI who would undoubtedly bring fresh energy to the show.
While encountering him once more in the Paraverse undeniably brings joy, it also diminishes the impact of his presence in the spin-off due to his early appearance.
In the realm of “Return to Paradise,” both it and Mackenzie are ready to step into the limelight, requiring no assistance or guidance.
In the same interview, actor Lloyd Griffith from the movie “Return to Paradise” expressed that Mooney’s cameo plays a crucial role in grounding the series. Similarly, Samson emphasized the significance of recognizing the show’s history, as well as the happiness and fanbase rooted in the original production.
Both points are valid but the timing of this was way off.
Return to Paradise is an engaging spin-off with strong roots traceable back to the beloved series, Death in Paradise. The tribute is evident in its comical tone, distinctive detective style, and the development of the Dolphin Cove police force (a detective adapting to a new team while grappling with an unfamiliar setting seems quite characteristic).
Still, Return to Paradise finds a way to put its own stamp on it.
At Dolphin Cove, Mackenzie’s familiar territory, we encounter a fresh perspective on the Paraverse equation. Her belongings are overflowing, sparking immediate curiosity, much like her interactions with her former fiancé Glenn (played by Tai Hara) do.
Incorporating Jack Mooney now seems designed to lend legitimacy to the spin-off, reinforcing its association with the brand and addressing any doubts about its authenticity. It was not necessarily required to do so.
The essence of “Death in Paradise” is ingrained throughout its structure, but even without that, Mackenzie and the team possess the strength to stand independently.
Mackenzie’s bond with Jack appears quite organic and genuine, considering that O’Hanlon’s character moved from Saint Marie to be nearer to his daughter living in London.
Instead, introducing Mooney towards the end of the series, after it had already established itself with the audience, could have provided a more powerful surprise, boosting confidence in the show’s quality.
On BBC One, you can catch “Beyond Paradise” and “Death in Paradise” every Friday at 8pm. Additionally, both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
