The Red Hot Chili Peppers made a significant profit five years ago by selling their song rights to Hipgnosis Songs Fund for $150 million. However, their recent deal was even more lucrative.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold the rights to their music recordings to Warner Music Group for over $300 million, as reported by Billboard. This deal is part of a larger $650 million investment made with Bain Capital, with the band’s music accounting for more than half of that total.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers earn roughly $26 million each year from streaming, sales, and other sources. Because Warner Music Group owns all of their music – including their 13 studio albums – the company has greater flexibility in how it utilizes their songs.
Red Hot Chili Peppers sell their recorded music catalog for more than $300 million to Warner Music Group
WMG clearly wouldn’t invest over $300 million in the band and their team without a plan to profit from the music. After all, WMG is a business focused on generating revenue through music.
This brings up the question of whether music is art or simply a product. Warner Music Group, for example, has released the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ albums since their fifth release, after EMI handled the first four. While companies like Warner focus on profiting from music, many artists create songs for deeply personal and creative reasons, and they’re driven to share their work with the world.
Problems start when musicians focus more on selling records than on creating meaningful music. Great music connects with listeners on an emotional level, and it feels dishonest when an artist seems to be exploiting those feelings just to make money.
Lots of artists sell their song catalogs, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the few who haven’t. They’ve built up a huge collection of popular albums and songs, and later sold the ownership of those recordings. However, that’s different from losing their passion for making music itself.
If you happen to know someone in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, like Anthony Kiedis or Flea, you could always ask them to treat you to dinner. They’re definitely able to afford it, having recently shared profits of over $300 million from a new business deal.
