Rebecca Gayheart listed as Eric Dane’s wife on his death certificate

As his family announced, Eric Dane passed away surrounded by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, their two daughters, and close friends.

His recently issued death certificate confirms that he and his former spouse were still legally married at the time of his death. He passed away on February 19th at age 53 from respiratory failure, which was brought on by ALS.

The 54-year-old woman, who is a widow, is also set to receive funds from a GoFundMe campaign created for Dane. The campaign raised $476,786 of its $500,000 goal to support Eric’s daughters and help them through this challenging time.

If Gayheart and the award-winning actor, who was cremated last Friday, hadn’t separated legally between 2018 and 2025, they would have celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary this year.

Dane had been seeing photographer Janell Shirtcliff since 2022. Meanwhile, he was publicly seen kissing Peter Morton, the 78-year-old co-founder of Hard Rock Cafe, at a restaurant in Beverly Hills on December 3rd.

This Tuesday is a difficult day for them, as it would have been their daughter Billie’s 16th birthday. They are also parents to their 14-year-old daughter, Georgia.

In a new Netflix documentary called Famous Last Words, Dane said these words to Billie and Georgia, in a recording made secretly last November.

I gave it my best shot, even though things weren’t always easy. But we really had a wonderful time, didn’t we? I especially cherish the memories of our beach trips – Santa Monica, Hawaii, Mexico… I can still picture you both playing in the ocean for hours, my sweet little ones.

It was a truly wonderful time, and I want to share four lessons I’ve learned from dealing with this illness. More than just listening, I hope you really take what I say to heart.

Born in San Francisco, the actor encouraged his children to savor life, pursue love and their passions, choose friends carefully, and live with unwavering determination.

Dane continued, ‘You two are different, but both of you are strong and able to bounce back. That’s something you both got from me.’

I hope I’ve shown you that you’re strong enough to handle anything life throws your way – even the most difficult challenges. Face whatever comes with grace and courage. Keep fighting, my daughters, and always be proud. Billie and Georgia, you mean the world to me; you are my everything. Good night, and I love you. These are my final words.

People with ALS typically live for two to five years after their first symptoms appear. While there’s no cure, FDA-approved treatments and therapies like physical and speech therapy can help slow down how the disease gets worse.
