Ranking the monsters of Tarot from least to most scary

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s been through countless chilling narratives and terrifying creature designs, I must say that Tarot has certainly left its mark among the genre’s elite. Having just landed on Netflix and swiftly climbing up the Top 10 chart for English-language movies, it’s a delight to witness this captivating teen scream find a new audience.

As a longtime fan of horror films and someone who’s always on the lookout for new releases to add to my watchlist, I was thrilled to hear about “Tarot,” a PG-13 horror movie that recently landed on Netflix. Having grown up watching countless horror movies, I have developed a keen eye for quality in the genre and can confidently say that “Tarot” is one of the best I’ve seen this year. The suspenseful plot, coupled with its eerie visuals and exceptional acting, has left me completely hooked. It’s no wonder that it quickly climbed up the Netflix Top 10 chart for English-language movies – it’s a must-watch for any horror enthusiast like myself.

It’s no wonder that Tarot is gaining a fresh following on the streaming platform, given how similar this trend is when Netflix picks up recent blockbusters. Although Tarot performed reasonably well at the box office, it received unfavorable criticisms. Now, those who didn’t want to spend much money to watch it in theaters can enjoy it from the convenience of their homes.

As a long-time horror movie enthusiast who has watched countless films of the genre, I must say that “Teen Scream” was a delightful surprise. The creators did a commendable job in crafting this film, and it’s not every day you come across a teen scream that is both fun and competently made. One aspect that truly stood out for me was the extraordinary monster designs. I found myself intrigued by the Tarot card monsters featured throughout the movie, so much so that I couldn’t help but rank them from least to most terrifying based on my own personal experience and preferences.

7. The Hanged Man

As a gamer immersed in this chilling flick, The Hanged Man was poised to be one of the scariest monsters I’ve encountered. The tension during the bridge scene, when my character stupidly stepped out of the car and Madeline got yanked away, was palpable and left me on the edge of my seat.

Among all the monsters in the movie, The Hanged Man likely had the least screen presence. His infrequent appearances in the film left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed by his final scene.

6. The Hermit

Much like The Hangman, The Hermit had limited screen presence. He appears briefly in a chilling scene where he terrifies Lucas, causing him to plummet onto the rail tracks and perish instantly due to the oncoming train. I placed The Hermit higher than The Hanged Man in my ranking mainly because of the gruesome nature of his demise.

5. The High Priestess

In this film, the High Priestess serves as the primary terrifying icon, featuring prominently on the poster and appearing in various scenes throughout the movie. She orchestrates most of the events, giving the impression that she’s the mastermind behind it all. I found her design to be incredibly impressive, but I felt that her death scene with Elise lacked originality, as she was simply crushed by a ladder.

4. Death

In a chilling turn of events, one of the most unsettling pursuits unfolds in the movie, involving Death himself. Considering his role, it’s fitting that he is the final entity seen on screen and the relentless antagonist who persistently follows Haley, the main character of the film.

Hiding subtly in the dark corners, Death appears as an overexaggerated skeleton, making him extraordinarily frightening.

3. The Devil

Although The Devil’s physical form isn’t strikingly unique compared to typical depictions of demons and devils in horror flicks, the chilling scene where he physically drags Grant towards Hell and the ominous appearance of the mouth of Hell itself, opening before them as Grant struggles to break free, creates a thrilling sequence in this horror film.

2. The Fool

I have a feeling that many people might not share my opinion on this, but to me, The Fool, the mysterious monster character from Tarot, stood out as one of its most chilling designs. Given my sensitivity towards the uncanny, the awkward, inhuman movements of The Fool were particularly disturbing, and watching him terrorize Paxton only intensified that feeling.

In this sequence, numerous clever visual effects were employed, amplifying the frightening atmosphere beyond normal expectations. However, despite this, Paxton wasn’t ranked first due to the fact that he managed to make it through in the end.

1. The Magician

As a devoted fan, I find myself captivated by the unique portrayal of The Magician among all the monstrous designs. Despite his supernatural appearance, there’s an uncanny relatability that makes him stand out. Yet, it’s his chilling execution of Paige’s character that truly shines in 2024’s horror landscape. Her grisly demise, where she is literally sawed in half, is a testament to the mastery of this classic trick. The heart-wrenching screams echoing through the spectral audience adds an unsettling layer of delight that sends shivers down one’s spine.

The unique way this scene was shot truly sets it apart, more so because the movie adhered to a PG-13 rating. This necessitated creative solutions in its production, which undeniably paid off magnificently.

Tarot is now streaming on Netflix.
