Ranking the Daedric Princes: Who Reigns Supreme in The Elder Scrolls?

In the realm of The Elder Scolls, two primary divine entities exist: the Aedra and the Daedric Princes. Contrary to popular belief, the Daedric Princes aren’t strictly “bad” gods. Instead, they represent some of the most potent and unpredictable forces in Tamriel, a status they’ve earned through their interaction with mortals. Throughout Tamriel’s history, these enigmatic entities have left indelible marks, as portrayed in games like The Elder Scrolls and The Elder Scrolls Online.

This list categorizes characters according to their influence on the series, their role in forming Tamriel’s history, and their associated artifacts. For instance, Sanguine might not be involved in events that drastically alter the world, but his quests are often unforgettable, and he is generally held in high esteem by players. Characters who had a significant impact on the story, but did not fully live up to their potential, have been placed lower on the list.

S-Tier: High Impact and High Reward

Even though his realm is considered minor in comparison to others within the world of The Elder Scrolls, Sheogorath has taken on significant roles throughout its stories and lore. For instance, in Morrowind, he’s remembered for causing the celestial body hovering above Vivec City. He also plays a pivotal part in Elsweyr and the Khajiit religion. In the tales of The Elder Scrolls, Sheogorath is one of the principal characters in the expansion pack of Oblivion titled Shivering Isles. Remarkably, the Hero of Kvatch from Oblivion actually assumes the persona of Sheogorath in all subsequent games of The Elder Scrolls, including Skyrim.

This version maintains the original’s structure and information but is written in a more conversational style to make it easier to read and understand.

In the realm of Morrowind, Azura is known as the Prince of Twilight and Dawn. She plays a pivotal role in the storyline. Nerevar has been reborn as the Nerevarine due to Azura’s intervention, and she is widely respected across Tamriel for her benevolent nature among the Daedric Princes. The Star of Azura, one of her renowned Daedric artifacts, is also a highly valuable item in The Elder Scrolls series and serves as an indestructible soul gem.

In my gaming world, I’ve squared off against Mehrunes Dagon and Hermaeus Mora in The Elder Scrolls series. In games like Oblivion and even Elder Scrolls Online, these two powerful entities have made quite an impact. Now, Mehrunes Dagon’s grand scheme to conquer Mundus in Oblivion didn’t quite pan out, but it did lead to some major shifts – the demise of the Septim dynasty, the destruction of the Amulet of Kings, and a long hiatus for the Dragonborn, until the emergence of the Last Dragonborn centuries later. As for Hermaeus Mora, he’s been more actively involved, especially during the Dragonborn Crisis and in Elder Scrolls Online.

A-Tier: Shaping Guilds and Cultures

In the realm of these groups, Nocturnal and Hircine serve as their prominent deities, with the Thieves Guild and the Companions respectively. Although the adoration of both deities isn’t common knowledge among their members, the heads of the Thieves Guild and the inner circle of the Companions have a grasp on the impact of Nocturnal and Hircine respectively. Notable artifacts related to Nocturnal include her Cowl and the Skeleton Key, while the Ring of Hircine and the Savior’s Hide are associated with him. Furthermore, it is through Hircine that lycanthropy originates in the world of The Elder Scrolls.

Sanguine might not be the most influential Daedric Prince in “The Elder Scrolls” series, nor has he been central to any major storylines; however, his unique quests make him quite memorable. Sanguine’s artifact, the Sanguine Rose, is particularly notable as it can conjure a dremora at varying levels, even higher than what can be summoned with a spell, making it an exceptionally valuable item. Interestingly, Martin Septim, the last Septim Emperor, was once the chosen of Sanguine and the possessor of the Sanguine Rose, adding an intriguing layer to his backstory.

In the realm of “The Elder Scrolls,” I find myself captivated by the complex character of Malacath. Originating as the Aldmeri god Trinimac during the ancient Merethic Era, he was transformed into the Daedric Prince Malacath by Boethiah. The followers Trinimac once led, who were Aldmeri then, would eventually evolve into the Orcs, a testament to the transformative power of history.

Boethiah is among the Daedric Princes who are more inclined towards violence and evil, but they are revered as one of the Three Noble Daedra by the Dunmer due to their pivotal role in shaping Dunmeri society by guiding the Chimer out of the Summerset Isles. They play a significant part in Dunmeri culture and are often credited for much of its distinctive traits. Notably, items associated with Boethiah, such as the Ebony Armor, are extremely potent and beneficial.

B-Tier: A Mixed Group of Daedric Princes

  • Molag Bal
  • Meridia
  • Vaermina
  • Clavicus Vile

Molag Bal is an evil Daedric Prince, renowned for being the originator of vampirism, although Clavicus Vile developed a different kind of vampirism devoid of violence. In the game “The Elder Scrolls Online,” Molag Bal serves as the main adversary and plays a crucial part in Tamriel’s history.

In contrast to other Daedric Princes, Meridia is often perceived as having a benevolent nature. She harbors intense disdain for the undead and actively opposes them, along with anyone who supports them. During the events of “The Elder Scrolls Online“, Meridia plays a pivotal role in the struggle against Molag Bal, eventually becoming an essential ally.

Among the Daedric Princes, Vaermina is recognized for her wickedness. Her domains encompass nightmares, dread, and dark omens. In a notable role within one of the main regions of The Elder Scrolls Online, and as one of the few who recall the Daedric Prince Ithelia, Vaermina’s impact in the world of The Elder Scrolls has been substantial, although her overall significance may not have reached its full potential.

Clavicus Vile is a distinctive Daedric Prince known for his cunning and deal-making abilities. Unlike others, he divides his power with his companion, the dog named Barbas, indicating a complex yet fluctuating friendship between them. Furthermore, Clavicus Vile’s design, bond with Barbas, and artifact Umbra contribute to his widespread popularity among Daedric Princes.

C-Tier: An Unsolved Mystery

  • Mephala
  • Peryite

As a gamer, I find Mephala, one of the Three Good Daedra among the Dunmer, is widely feared by the inhabitants of Tamriel due to her associations with the Morag Tong and her realms of deceit, secrecy, and murder. It’s not hard to see why some speculate there might be a connection between Mephala and the Morag Tong.

On the other hand, Peryite is generally viewed as the weakest among the Daedric Princes, seldom appearing to mortals. However, his artifact in Skyrim, Spell Breaker, is an exceptional shield that proves quite useful for my adventures. Additionally, Peryite’s ability to remember Ithelia makes him a character I’m keen on watching for future appearances within The Elder Scrolls series.

D-Tier: Potential Not Quite Reached

  • Jyggalag
  • Ithelia
  • Namira

Two Daedric Princes, Jyggalag and Ithelia, were intentionally left in obscurity by the world. Jyggorath took over from where Jyggalag stood, while Ithelia was locked away and everyone’s recollections of her were deliberately wiped out. Despite their immense potential as Daedric Princes and characters, their limited showings and unfulfilled promise relegate them to the bottom rungs of the list.

Namira is known as the Daedric Prince associated with decay. So far, she has not had a significant part in any of the stories within The Elder Scrolls series. Her domain, which involves cannibalism, rot, insects, and repugnant creatures, suggests that she will likely continue to remain on the outskirts. At present, her primary artifact, the Ring of Namira, does not have a substantial impact in Skyrim, indicating that either a new artifact or significant changes in The Elder Scrolls 6 might be required for her to take a more prominent role.
