Radio legend John Laws emotionally signs off after 71 years on air: 'I will really miss you'

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the lives and careers of influential figures, I must say that the retirement of John Laws is a bittersweet moment. With 71 years under his belt in radio broadcasting, this man has not only provided entertainment but also served as an icon for the industry.

On Thursday, it marked the conclusion of an epoch as renowned broadcaster John Laws bid farewell from the airwaves permanently.

The longtime broadcaster, who’s 89 years old, recently disclosed that he is retiring after a 71-year stint in radio broadcasting. He has since said goodbye for the last time on his final program.

At a heartfelt goodbye, the man affectionately known as ‘Golden Tonsils’ expressed regret over having to part ways, yet acknowledged that his departure from the air was not something he found cause to complain about.

I will really miss you,’ John sweetly told his loyal listeners.

Additionally, I’ll cherish every memory accumulated over the years, as they represent a significant stretch of time.

He stated that he has nothing but positive feelings, as it’s undeniably tough to part ways, and indeed, he feels a deep sadness about having to do so.

After his last performance, John confessed that saying goodbye to his long-lasting career felt both sweet and bitter when talking to Confidential.

‘I feel a bit sad but I feel okay,’ he said.

In a day or two, it seems likely that whatever this is will find me, yet I have absolutely no cause for complaint whatsoever.

I’ve lived an extraordinary life, built a remarkable career, and have an exceptional family. Consequently, I find myself in a good place, however, this marks my final chapter.

As a devotee, I can’t help but echo John’s humorous remark. He hinted at feeling somewhat reluctant about leaving behind the delightful interactions with his airborne companions, likening himself to a ‘doted-upon child.’

Since I’m quite accustomed to being the center of attention, I might find it hard when you’re gone. Perhaps we could arrange for regular check-ins, like once a month, where a few folks come over just to chat with me? Would that be possible?” He joked.

2SM’s longtime radio host announced back in October that he would retire from broadcasting on November 8.

I took to the airwaves, heart pounding with excitement, to share some extraordinary news following a heartfelt letter from one of my ardent fans. For years, their unwavering support and laughter have been an integral part of my broadcasting journey, and this moment was no exception.

He suggested that the sound would cease soon, indicating it was probably time for a break, according to him.

I’ve been doing this for an incredibly long span of time – over seven decades, you might say. Is that long enough? I believe it has been.

John said he felt the time was right and he won’t be changing his mind.

He mentioned that, starting from the first week of November, it would mark 71 years since he began broadcasting on the radio.

‘I don’t want to be greedy, I had a fantastic 71 years. Loved almost every minute of it.

“I continue to feel vibrant and fit, as if each day is just beginning for me. When my time comes, that will be the end of it – no returns or do-overs.

John revealed he is planning to travel and read in his well-deserved retirement.

In that moment, the 2SM Instagram page posted a collection of images showcasing the radio legend at different points throughout his extensive and notable career.

‘What a day! And what a 70 years it’s been,’ the caption read.

To all of John’s devoted fans, a big thank you for helping keep his dream thriving! Also, gratitude to every individual who played a part in today’s program.

1953 marked the beginning of John’s broadcasting journey at 3BO, Bendigo. His distinctive approach to communication earned him the endearing moniker ‘The Golden Throat’.

Following a four-year stint at 3BO, he transitioned to metropolitan radio station, 2UE, and was among the initial disc jockeys to spin rock ‘n’ roll tunes there.

He stepped away from radio for four years in 2007 and returned to the air on 2SM in 2011.

Recently, John had to temporarily step back from his 2SM radio show due to spending a prolonged time in the hospital.

Following treatment for an ear blockage, his condition worsened significantly and he stayed at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney for a three-week period.

He had contracted pneumonia, but later revealed he was luckily on the mend.

‘I’m alive, I’m well, I’m happy,’ he told The Saturday Telegraph at the time.

In 2022, he took bouts of leave from his radio gig after suffering from respiratory infections.

Regardless, John informed the media outlet that he had no intention of retiring, and instead continued working for another two years on-air.

He stated, “I activate the microphone each day and the screen becomes filled with content. I return to the broadcast, engaged in activities that bring me joy. So, why should I ever pause?

Presenter Dave Cochrane filled in for John on his 2SM show while he was in hospital.

John lost his wife Caroline to cancer in February 2020 after 40 years of marriage.
