A Quentin Tarantino movie known for its divisive and controversial story is now gaining popularity on streaming. It’s currently rising in the charts after becoming available on Hulu.
According to FlixPatrol, Django Unchained has been one of the most popular movies on Hulu for the past week. It was the #1 movie from February 4th to 7th, and has since remained in second place, following the comedy Ella McCay starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Woody Harrelson. Released in 2012, the film features Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kerry Washington, and tells the story of an enslaved man who teams up with a bounty hunter in the American South and Old West.
Now that more people are watching the Tarantino film on Hulu, it’s likely to spark the same debates it did when it first came out in 2012, thanks to its challenging themes and depictions. Despite this, the film continues to be well-regarded by critics, currently holding an 87% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though both critics and viewers recognize its intense action and strong language.
The film has sparked significant controversy due to its use of racial slurs and its portrayal of slavery, prompting criticism from filmmakers and activists. One prominent actor stated he would boycott the film, deeming it disrespectful to his heritage. He later explained that the realities of American slavery were far removed from the romanticized depiction in the film, comparing it instead to a Holocaust and emphasizing the importance of honoring the memory of those stolen from Africa.
Jesse Williams, known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy and his activism, also criticized the film, arguing it inaccurately portrays the lives of enslaved people. He pointed out that the film depicts them in an unrealistic manner – wearing beautiful clothes, playing, and relaxing as if living in luxury – interspersed with moments of violence, rather than reflecting the harsh realities of slavery.
Although some people argued that the strong language in Django Unchained was true to the historical period, the film faced criticism for its violence. In fact, the premiere was delayed after the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, and many critics found the film excessively violent and disturbing.
Despite any controversies surrounding it, Django Unchained is still considered one of Quentin Tarantino’s biggest achievements. The film was highly praised, receiving five Academy Award nominations—including one for Best Picture—and Christoph Waltz won the award for Best Supporting Actor. It also performed very well financially, earning over $449 million globally on a $100 million budget, making it Tarantino’s most profitable film ever.
Fans Are Eager to Watch Tarantino’s Upcoming 10th & Final Film
The recent popularity of Django Unchained on streaming shows just how much fans love Tarantino’s movies. He’s created nine projects so far, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood from 2019 being his latest. His impressive filmography, including hits like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, continues to grow.
Quentin Tarantino has often said he plans to retire after making ten films, but he hasn’t announced what his last movie will be. A planned drama for August 2025 fell through, leaving his final project uncertain. He later admitted his initial idea, titled The Movie Critic, wasn’t very appealing, questioning who would want to watch a film about a movie critic.
Django Unchained is now streaming on Hulu.
