Warning: Spoilers for Project Hail Mary are below!
In the exciting sci-fi adventure, Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays Dr. Grace, who is sent on a desperate mission to save Earth as the sun’s light begins to fade. During his travels, he encounters Rocky, an alien from the planet Erid. Despite the language barrier, they discover they share a common goal: to save their home worlds. Working together, they find a way to communicate and combine their knowledge to tackle a seemingly unsolvable problem.
The ending of Project Hail Mary was so satisfying! Seeing Grace and Rocky together on Erid, knowing they’d actually solved the problem, was amazing. Rocky finally got to be with Adrian again, and he told Grace his ship was ready to take her home. But honestly, Grace didn’t seem in a hurry to leave! She decided to stay and teach the kids on Erid about things like the speed of light, which felt perfect for her. It really fit with everything Andy Weir established in the book. And then, after the credits rolled, there was one more little scene – definitely worth waiting for! It was a fantastic way to wrap everything up.
What Is ‘Project Hail Mary’s Post-Credits Scene About?
Moviegoers are now used to watching long credit scenes that hint at future movies, a trend popularized by Marvel. Since Project Hail Mary is a single, complete story, there isn’t a sequel to tease. However, after the credits finish rolling, viewers get one final message.
While not a traditional post-credits scene with visuals, those who see Project Hail Mary get one last audio message from Rocky. His voice is unusually musical and creates a special listening experience. Currently, the message isn’t translated, but many viewers believe Rocky is saying something simple like “Goodbye,” “Thank you,” or “The End.” Some fans even speculate the message is a communication from Rocky to Grace regarding his spacecraft.
Fans are having fun online, joking about the message from Rocky at the end of the movie. Some posts imagine him promising to appear in a future Avengers: Doomsday film, while others playfully suggest he’s trying to contact people about their car warranties. Although these jokes are all in good spirit, the real meaning of Rocky’s message is still a mystery, and it’s unclear if the filmmakers will ever reveal what he said.
Rocky’s Message Still Makes Sense

The scene after the credits was a playful touch, typical of the filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. But because there aren’t any plans for a sequel, it makes sense that the message is left unexplained. While Andy Weir might eventually write another Project Hail Mary book, for now, Rocky and Grace remaining friends on Erid marks the end of their story.

While not a direct sequel, Andy Weir’s novel Artemis feels like a spiritual successor to The Martian and Project Hail Mary, forming an unofficial sci-fi trilogy with another novel planned. A film adaptation of Artemis has been in development for some time. Director Drew Goddard describes the latest script as ‘delightful,’ noting that he and screenwriter Patrick Lord have finally solved the biggest challenge with the story: the moon’s gravity. Artemis differs from Weir’s other novels, shifting the focus to a smuggler involved in a conspiracy on a lunar colony.
Now that Project Hail Mary has done so well during its opening weekend, directors Lord and Miller might get the go-ahead to start working on Artemis quickly. It’s possible the message at the end of the film was a hint about Artemis, though that’s probably not the case. Regardless, Rocky’s cryptic message gives fans one last enjoyable moment with his unique way of communicating and gives them something to discuss and debate after leaving the theater about what he meant.
