Production on Starfleet Academy is set to start at the end of August

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who’s seen more episodes than I care to admit (and that’s saying something!), I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia mixed with anticipation as we approach yet another exciting chapter in the Star Trek universe. The addition of Sandro Rosta to Starfleet Academy, along with the return of Tig Notaro and Robert Picardo, promises a fresh blend of familiar faces and new talent that’s sure to keep us on the edge of our seats. And let’s not forget about the powerhouse duo of Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti!

Starfleet Academy has completed its roster of cadets by welcoming Canadian actor and model Sandro Rosta to the team, according to Trekmovie. In the upcoming Star Trek series, we’ll see Tig Notaro from Star Trek: Discovery and Robert Picardo from Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Prodigy serving as regular cast members. Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman from Discovery will appear in multiple episodes, while Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti are set to take on leading roles during the first season. It is anticipated that Giamatti’s character may only be around for one season due to his portrayal of the villain. Additionally, Gina Yashere from Bob Hearts Abishola will join as an instructor in the series.

Production for Starfleet Academy is scheduled to commence towards the end of August at Pinewood Studios, the same location where Discovery was previously filmed. Actors Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diane, and Zoë Steiner have also been added to the cast.

Despite kicking off its production this year, it’s likely that the upcoming series won’t hit Paramount+ until 2026. The only fresh Star Trek content coming our way in 2021 is Star Trek: Lower Decks, which will air its fifth and final season starting in October. We can expect the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and, likely, the Section 31 movie featuring Michelle Yeoh in 2025. Although a new comedy series has been given the go-ahead, it doesn’t seem like we’ll be seeing its production any time soon.

The number of new Star Trek projects has decreased significantly since there were five active series. With Discovery finishing its final season and Lower Decks nearing completion, only Strange New Worlds will be released next year, leaving us with a scarcity of new episodes. Although there’s a possibility that the Section 31 movie could lead to a series, it probably won’t happen any time soon. Similarly, while fans hope for a third season of Star Trek: Prodigy, if it happens, it would take quite some time. After Strange New Worlds, we may have to brace ourselves for a prolonged wait.
