Prince William and Princess Catherine do the same things that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan are criticized for

As a dedicated fan who has witnessed the royal family’s antics for years now, I can’t help but feel a twinge of exasperation when it comes to the hypocritical treatment of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan compared to their counterparts, William and Catherine.

One constant in both traditional British media and social media is the presence of individuals quick to express their opinions that Prince Harry and his spouse aren’t fitting enough for the royal family. They often voice this by scrutinizing and criticizing nearly every action taken by the couple.

Over time, they’ve consistently focused on finding fault with Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, even for something as innocuous as holding hands. Any hints of affection were also met with disapproval. In truth, many articles have been published indicating that these displays of affection violate the established royal etiquette.

When Prince William and Princess Catherine display affection through hand-holding or other gestures, it’s quite a heartwarming sight coming from members of the royal family. It appears to be a beautiful moment, indeed.

If you find this appears inconsistent or insincere, you’re on the right track. It’s becoming increasingly clear that such inconsistencies are under scrutiny, and a recent report from Showbiz Cheatsheet suggests this heightened focus on hypocrisy is growing stronger.

In the report from Showbiz Cheatsheet, they break it down perfectly:

No matter where they are, the prince and princess are always touching and being affectionate with each other. There’s even some hand-holding. And what’s interesting about that is over the years Meghan and Harry have been criticized by some for being overly affectionate when William and Kate were doing the same thing.

One key factor contributing to this phenomenon is the viral video posted on X (previously Twitter) in early September, which highlights numerous instances of hand-holding and displays of affection between Prince William and Princess Catherine, particularly when they’re in public. Unlike Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, it appears that such displays of affection are acceptable for them. The reason behind this distinction could possibly be because they are the future King and Queen, and perhaps it’s considered important for them to seem relatable to the public.

The hypocrisy in royal behavior serves as a clear indication that “royal etiquette” is neither fixed nor objective; it’s essentially flexible and self-imposed. It has been noted that Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, are generally more reserved when expressing their affection in public. This reserve, as high-ranking royals, is perceived as appropriate for their status. However, the criticism directed at Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, for exhibiting similar displays of affection seems illogical, given that they are often criticized more harshly for it.

Regardless of their royal status, it seems reasonable that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should feel free to express their affection for one another. If this display of love makes you uncomfortable, perhaps consider why that might be. Why does public demonstration of care for another person seem inappropriate? Shouldn’t people be allowed to show their love for each other, as long as it remains respectful and doesn’t cross the line into overt displays of affection like excessive kissing or embracing?

It would be pleasant if every small action taken by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wasn’t constantly scrutinized. Regardless of whether you support their actions or not, perhaps we could give them the same grace that other royals receive without being subjected to relentless criticism in the media for similar behaviors.

What do you think fellow royal fans?
