The highly anticipated reboot series is finally moving forward after a long and difficult development process. After years of delays, it’s now officially happening at Prime Video.
According to reports, Peter Friedlander, who leads Amazon’s global television division, has approved two new series. One is a show based on the movie RoboCop, and the other is Sex Criminals, a project from Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani that Amazon previously declined. Friedlander is now focused on hiring a head of scripted content, so it’s uncertain when filming will begin on either series.
The RoboCop Reboot Is Making Traction
Reports first surfaced in 2026 that Amazon was developing a new series based on RoboCop. In 2024, it was announced that Peter Ocko (known for Lodge 49) would write and run the show for Prime Video, with James Wan expected to be an executive producer. Peter Weller, the original star of RoboCop, later expressed interest in reprising his role if Amazon MGM Studios contacted him.
When asked if he might return, Weller responded, “I’m not sure, that’s a good question. It would depend on a lot of things falling into place.”
Nancy Allen, who starred alongside him, said she’d need to see a script before considering being involved. She believes the original movie was the strongest, and subsequent installments haven’t quite measured up, but hopes a potential TV show could change that.
Will the New RoboCop Series Finally Come to Fruition?
It’s not yet confirmed whether the newly approved RoboCop series is the same project previously developed by Ocko. It’s also unclear if the series will be a fresh start, or if it will have connections to the original RoboCop movies. Ocko’s initial concept described a story where a large technology company works with the police to create a high-tech crime fighter.
Peter Weller and Nancy Allen returned to lend their voices and appearances to the official video game released in 2023. The game featured a brand new story set within the world of RoboCop, and felt like a direct continuation of the first movie. Players generally enjoyed the game, and its success likely played a role in Amazon’s decision to approve the new RoboCop TV series.
The original RoboCop movies came out in 1987, 1990, and 1993. A separate, unrelated movie was then released in 2014. On television, there was a RoboCop series in 1994, but it only lasted one season and wasn’t very memorable. A reboot miniseries, RoboCop: Prime Directives, followed in 2001. In addition to the live-action versions, there were also two animated series: RoboCop in 1988 and RoboCop: Alpha Commando in 1998.
