Prime Video’s New “Statham Meets Bourne” Style Action Thriller Crashes Into Streaming Top 10

A new action thriller has unexpectedly become a streaming hit. Filled with classic elements – a skilled but troubled secret agent, a dangerous mission, and plenty of action – the film has quickly climbed into the top 10 in the U.S. and is gaining popularity worldwide, suggesting it could become a major action franchise.

Although it hasn’t quite become the most popular show on streaming yet, this new action hero is rapidly gaining ground. Currently, Amazon’s most-watched title is the recent sci-fi action film Mercy, starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, but this newcomer is giving it strong competition.

Alongside Mercy, Uma Thurman’s new action film Pretty Lethal is performing well, landing in second place. Other successful movies include the Oscar-winning Sinners, Channing Tatum’s comedy-drama Roofman, the documentary Melania, and the popular animated film Shrek. However, a lesser-known film is also gaining traction, currently at #7 overall in the US, and remarkably holding onto second place worldwide.

‘Agent Zeta’ Delivers All Manner of Espionage & Explosions

The action thriller Agent Zeta, directed by Dani de la Torre and starring Mario Casas (known from Bird Box: Barcelona), premiered on Prime Video on March 20th and is already proving to be a hit. The story follows Zeta, a spy tasked with finding the last surviving member of a secret operation called ‘Swamp’ after five former operatives are killed. He teams up with a Colombian spy to uncover the truth about the mysterious sixth agent and what happened during Operation Swamp.

Joining the cast of Agent Zeta are Luis Zahera (known for Cell 211), Mariela Garriga (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), and Christian Tappan (Primate). Currently, Agent Zeta hasn’t received enough reviews to earn a Rotten Tomatoes score, but that doesn’t seem to be hurting its popularity. Viewers are already intrigued by the new action hero and the promise of action-packed scenes, including explosions and fights.

While Not as Elite as Bourne, ‘Agent Zeta’ Will Satisfy Those Seeking Statham

Although audiences are really enjoying Agent Zeta, and its popularity is expected to increase, critics have had a mixed reaction. Some have compared it favorably to Prime Video’s Jack Ryan, while others see similarities to more controversial Amazon shows like Citadel and The Terminal List.

The movie clearly tries to combine the styles of action thrillers like the Bourne and James Bond series, and the Jack Ryan films, but it doesn’t quite succeed. While the action is good and some of the acting, including Luis Zahera’s performance, has been well-received, critics have pointed out that it strives for the quality of the Bourne films but falls short, landing closer to a Jason Statham movie. Surprisingly, this makes it even more interesting.
